Extremely Early Maytag A806 Washer

Well, I’ve had this set for a few years. Was doing some research on them as I’ve been been thinking of selling them. Found out this A806 is from January 1966. It has Suds Saver and is in excellent shape. The matching electric dryer is from October 1968. Opinions? Someone said this may be one of the earliest 806’s around.

They look to be in very low use original condition, what was the story about these Dave ?

Purchase the dryer in Cincinnati and the washer in Columbus. Both work well and I’ve done some maintenance to the dryer and washer. I used them as daily drivers for a year or so then purchased a Neptune set that I now use(better rinse). I also have a NOS suds saver hose which I was told was the last one Maytag had in stock.

That is indeed one of the first 806s produced, as this generation of Maytags was introduced for 1966. Both machines look to be immaculate.

That filter does look so clean.  I wonder if it's a replacement?

I believe it might be a replacement but I am not entirely sure. I’ve seen a few other Maytags from the mid to late 60’s while surfing through with that style of lint filter so it might be factory but looks a little too aftermarket to be factory.

Beautiful set! And yes, this is more than likely the earliest surviving A806 in the group, and both are in incredible shape. Does the agitator pull out with ease or is it stuck to the shaft?

For those inquiring about the lint filter, Maytag revised the Wash Power series lint filter assembly in Feb 1968. IMO, while they are pretty neat looking, the earlier mesh filters do not perform as well as the later full poly filter.

Early 06 washer lint filter

This earlier mesh lint filter actually worked much better but in hard water areas was very difficult to clean we’ve all seen what a mess a Maytag lint filter can become with hard water especially if it’s not cleaned regularly And the user uses way too little or cheap detergent. Period

This earlier agitator with the separate pumping part below is all so much more effective but unfortunately allowed water to get close to the main seal and caused more failures of a serious nature.

I still love Tags too, despite disappointments

I'll never forget the first time I saw these new Washpower Automatic models featured in a Full 2-page ad in one of my Mother's House and Garden (or something) magazines. I was fascinated by the pitch because it was an extremely expensive/well-produced ad, and the 'Tags were dramatically different from the GE's I was familiar with.

 

The older Tags I had seen at other people's houses seemed like one step away from Wringer washers and just tired. I agree with John about the filters except I never knew the older agitator was detrimental to the machines. Pity; they seem to be more effective. Although I still suspect that the flexing, unattached Power Fins were responsible for a lot of snagging and tearing of some of my clothes.

Vintage?

So not sure what year these are but they’re 806s. The washer oddly does not have the model/serial number plate — it looks like there never was one. Anyway, they are my daily drivers and I’ve had them for a couple years with no problem other than sometimes the washer fill valve will drip when the machine is off.

Can anyone at least provide an approximate year based upon the dryer’s model/serial number?

Dryer is March, 1974.

The washer is probably close to that. The placard was located on the back of the machine from 1949 until 1975 when they changed its location to under the lid for the washers. As you can see, Maytag was already gearing up for that change on this model.
