I was gonna say.....with the solenoid unplugged.....you should get high speed all the time.....that arm might be stuck causing slow speed......otherwise, the clutch most likely can't be stuck in low gear....
 
The machine always started out in slow agitation regardless of cycle. Just about when the tub locks into place, it changes into normal agitation. I disconnected the solenoid with no change. The assembly is pretty gunked up, and I can definitely smell the distinct odor of old gear oil when she's in a spin and that motor coupler is blowing air out of the cabinet. Maybe it's bound, a broken return spring?
I found this kit online for a new complete motor, belt, clutch and relay to put on my wish list if I wanted to take the easy way out, but that's not how we do it here on AW.O!
One thing that I need answered is regarding this warning label included with the kit.
Does this make buying a used motor an act in futility if it doesn't come with it's previous relay?

** I got my normal/fast speed back! **
It seems that little actuator arm for the speed solenoid was bent. Even though the relay wasn't energized, the arm would not drop down far enough and still made enough contact to keep the clutch engaged, hence the continuous gentle/slow speed.
GE did not make it easy to fix either, unless you want to tilt the machiene forward, the relay is not only hard to see, but also to get at. I had to get my brightest LED lamp jammed into the motor yoke just to get enough light in there to work on it. There are 2 peep holes on the side of the yoke, but move your head and you loose sight of it. Very frustrating. I was finally able to bent it back a bit to free the clutch cam and Ba-bamm, I'm back in Biz!
I have not tried to reengage gentle mode until I am ready to repair the actuator arm. Right now I have to divert my attention to repairing my Neptune bearings, at least I don't have to replace any major part$!

Tonight I replaced the split drain hose with a spare hose I had for a Whirlpool Duet, connected the speed solenoid back up, and started the machine.
Filled, started to agitate in gentle as normal, and then, click, back into fast agitate/spin for the rest of the cycle.
So it appears the speed solenoid and actuator arm are working properly.

I decided to run another test load, this time with the Permanent Press cycle. It consists of Gentle agitation and fast spins with the extra rinse. The speed solenoid would be getting quite a workout here. Machine performed flawlessly, no issues. Seems these old GE's are tough and hard to kill. Rust-through is probably what sends these out to pasture versus outright mechanical failure.

kinda funny Louie....your machine did look like the one in post 170......but that pic in 168 is your base, with a changed over control panel.....and gone from Minibasket, to Handwash with the 2-n-1 agitator, and RimFlo filtering.....and still going strong!

GE Filter Flow Washers

A few notes.

 

    GE 2SP clutch washers always start on low speed when set for Hi SP, they will shift to high as the clutches carrier plate comes up to speed from the friction in the carrier plate bearing, this can take as little as a few seconds to more than 30 seconds, this is completely normal.

 

    The motor start relay should be replaced when replacing the motor if the old motor  had an electrical failure or if the motor being installed is not the exact motor that was originally on the washer. It should also always be used if it comes packed with the replacement motor.

 

    You can not use the Mini-Basket or agitator mounted lint filter on the two piece HP style agitators, these first two features were exclusive GE features and the two piece agitator was given only to HP and its derivatives like Penn-Crest.
 
That hose

fits the 1950's FF machines so its a keeper! But someone here on the club was nice enough to snag it for me and is sending it to me.

As for price , well where am I gonna find a 1950's part these days? Its blind luck to keeping things original.

But wait there is another much later model FF in the offing coming soon to a basement near me!! Details to follow as the Multiverse unfolds!
