We picked this up this afternoon from a collector. I knew, it's a 1962 whirlpool telephone dial dishwasher. It's the top-of-the-line version with the wash arm and the dual detergent dispenser.

Paul turquoise dude found one of these a half dozen years ago in turquoise up in Canada, I tried to talk him out a bit, but he likes it as well.

This was the first design built-in dishwasher, whirlpool ever built themselves, when consumer reports tested it around 1959 they said it washed better without detergent and most dishwashers did with detergent. It was so effective.

This one appears to be in very good shape. It will join the wall of dishwashers at the museum after some servicing.

Early whirlpool built-in dishwasher

Hi Ken, unfortunately it is a plastisol interior, which is one reason not many of these survived along with other brands that use this type of coating.

Luckily, I don't see any damaged or failing areas and for the little bit of use it to get in the museum it will outlast me, lol

Stunning!

A dishwasher that was truly 60s years ahead of its time in ever way. Only thing I would pick up on is the lack of fan on the drain motor, but being Whirlpool I'm sure they knew they didn't need it. Just incredible how Whirlpool was the leader decades ahead.

I have to ask, did Whirlpool get this design from Europe or did Europe copy Whirlpool?

Congratulations, John! I'm glad that you found one and that I can now leave for Australia with a clear head knowing you'll not be up here to snatch my '63 Telephone-Dial Whirlpool!
Mine was actually found in Cincinnati, OH - PhilR and I had a grueling drive through an Ohio blizzard to get the dishwasher back to Canada again. I can honestly say I have never heard of one up here.

Whirlpool telephone dial dishwasher

People know nothing of a telephone dial today, yes, Kenny that was my thought yesterday when I was looking at it. It seems so simple to us, but I dare say that some younger people might look at that today and not even be able to figure out how it was used.

Whirlpool introduced this dishwasher around 1958. It was an all new product for them. I'm sure it was a product of their engineering. It didn't come from Europe, etc. very few places in the world had great home dishwashers that early.

In my estimation, this would probably have been the best performing dishwasher. The world had yet seen for home use, it goes through a rinse, then dispensers detergent, another rinse dispensers, the second batch of detergent and two more rinses that coupled with a very powerful pump a complete filter to keep small particles from being circulated and an 800 W heating element to maintain water temperature would make it a very effective dishwasher.

It was certainly not the best dishwasher ever made durability wise. The KitchenAid's were still more rugged, even though they would not have performed as well mainly due to a lack of water heating.

What immense fun ~

To stick your pinky into that slot and dial up a dish call. Amazing. Never knew of one, even Paul's.

Thrilling that two of Aworgs founding fathers both presented miracle finds back to back, and both named John of variant spellings just like the Gyromatic.

Bon voyage to Paul down under. Bring back a marsupial, lol.

This brings to mind, when I worked for an orthodontist, Dial-A-Weld...

Supposedly used for welding brackets for braces, though never saw it actually used, only sitting off-side in the office...

I may have known many of my contemporaries wearing braces, perhaps implemented by this now likely obsolete method of fitting/implanting, but supplanted by more modern methods and techniques  of welds, I'd never seen either...

Gone with the dialing of telephones, (& you'd be surprised how I tend to hear "dial" on pages overhead at work) to call a line of the worker wanting assistance via calling our phone-intercom...
