Typical Florida weather.

The areas of the state that used to be unpopulated palmetto jungles are now full of subdivisions and strip-malls. So I'm afraid we will see more of this sort of thing.

Central Florida tornadoes

I am in Orlando just about 30 minutes south of the devastation. I was woken last night around 4am and heard the heavy rain and thunder and didn't give it a second thought. To wake up this morning and see the devastation and realize how close it was to my home was downright scary. I have a new found respect for people living in tornado alley thats for sure!!.

Yes, blessings out there to anyone in the storm zone, or, anyone who may have had the misfortune to have been caught traveling through the zone at that time.

(No, global warming doesn't exist....)

Steve, Mayken4Now is in Pensacola which is Northwest FL in the Panhandle. The tornadoes hit Central Florida in the areas north of Orlando. I am sure he is fine since Pensacola is about 6 hours away. =)

All is fine here with me. I woke up to a loud crash of thunder at 6:30 a.m. followed by another. That was about it other than some rain up until noon. My heart goes out to those who lost so much. Terry

Collectively I've spent over ten years of my life in central and south Florida, and I have come to assume that if there is a storm in Florida----- it will have tornadoes.

No one who lives there should be terribly surprised. It is kinda like being "surprised" by lightning in Tampa.

I can remember pulling into Watson Park to watch a seaplane land as a line of storms approached downtown Miami and observing a tornado form.
The condo at Bal Harbour was on a high enough floor to observe "waterspouts" out over the ocean all the time.

I used to observe tornadoes trying to form in thunderstorms all the time, during the summer months in the Tampa Bay area (and waterspouts too).

Now that Florida has become so heavily populated it just stands to reason that more and more people are going to be affected by these storms. And global warming assures that they will become more powerful then ever before too. The old time Florida folks used to laugh at the thought of leaving for something as silly as a little 'ole hurricane , but the ones still alive nowadays most likely do, and those hurricanes aren't silly any more .

Be sure and get a "weather radio".

Thanks Appnut(Bob)

and others for asking. ~sudsshane is correct. The Pensacola area is about 5.5 hours from that devestation.

BUT, My parents live in The Villages. That's another story.

They are OK, but as shane put is, disasterous.

Steve...

I am so glad your parents are safe. Did they have much damage to their home? The weather here continues to be bad. More rain and thunder today...

As long as El Nino is in place, there is the risk of these types of storms as the jet stream sits very close to Florida, pushing storms along at upwards of 100 mph. That's faster and more powerful then any of the 2004 hurricanes can lay claim to. The only upside is that come storm season, the jet stream will tend to push any hurricane away from land and outwards and upwards away from Florida.

The Villages is a mess, almost 1200 homes damaged or destroyed. Fortunately, I don't think any loss of life occurred there, and the good folks who sustained no damage to their homes have graciously taken in those neighbors whose homes were damaged or destroyed, until they can have their homes repaired or re-built, as needed.

The worst part is Florida is home to many, many mobile home parks and they just don't stand a chance against a major storm like that. Not that stick built homes can withstand an F3 tornado, either!

The Villages

shane and Bob:

My partents home did not sustain major damage. Some, but just debris blowing. Nothing at all to complain about.

My God, I still cannot belive this, and how it occured.

Thanks for all the concern. It makes one feel good.

Steve
