frigidaire gallery stove

Hey guys need some advice for my elderly ladies next door. They have a Frigidaire gallery (fef389wfsa) flat top stove. The front burner when you turn on the knob sparks fly and smell like burning plastic. She told me that the burner made a loud pop then shut off.
Should they try to repaire or just get a cheap new or used stove. They are on a limited budget. Thanks for advice.... Chaz

Where do the sparks fly from? It might just need a new element, or perhaps a wire is shorted.

The sparks start as soon as you touch the knob and turn , The glass burner is the hi heat or fast heat one and has a dark spot in the middle like a burn out.
