Frigidaire Touch and Cook Range

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

'Almost Perfect Condition'  drew my attention to the 'starbursts' where the surface elements are - there is some evidence of burning/scorching and you've got to wonder if all units are still fully functional.  The clock on the control panel doesn't seem to be working either, so the oven wouldn't be self-cleaning by itself anymore...

The white ceramic top looks like a real Corning top and this begs the question:  did Frigidaire make the Corning-branded smooth-top ranges or did Corning make them and re-badge as Frigidaire....  I've forgotten what the backstory on them really was.

First Frigidaire Touch-And -Cook Range

These were interesting ranges, FD also had a single 24" wall oven and a cook-top and a drop in range with this control system on them.

The CT glass was either Corning or PPG [ Pittsburgh plate glass ], the odds of finding one of these cool ranges where all the controls are working might be poor. I stripped a range like this a few years ago and saved most of the electronics if someone gets this range and needs some used parts.

Does anyone know if this control system was available on the conventional burner ranges? Or did you have to opt for the smoothtop?

I read through the patents for this design earlier this year and it's important to understand it's all pre-microprocessor! You can imagine the state of consumer digital electronics in the early 70's...then add in a kitchen environment, heavy-current loads and hot temps. They were really pushing the state of the art at the time. That said, I'd probably bring one home to restore if it crossed my path....-C

Hey everybody. Im in Oahu docked and doing great. Just ate some calamari and ahi for lunch.
The Touch N Cook range was one of FRIGIDAIRE'S most unique firsts. I saw it in FRIGIDAIRE'S vault in Philadelphia at the FRIGIDAIRE SALES COEPORATION'S main Mid Atlantic office building on Hunting Park Avenue. It was October,1972 Before leaving, Mr Ferris, the VP,handed.me a brochure not yet released to the public on the TNC and a new 1973 Suites catalog. Jones Home Center received the first one in November and had me do demos on it after being told by their rep how much I already knew about it. By 1975,I had my own. In poppy red!! It was the best one I had ever seen and reminded me a,bit of the RSE36S with a ceramic top ,touch controls and lighted backsplash. Mins never broke. I just hated the lack of a see through clear glass window. John L. had a GE 40" Americana top of the line from around 1967 and gave it to me. That range was my second favorite and,had it been a smooth top model,it would have been a tie. Being able to,pre program any appliance to do whatever you, need with little or no assistance,is awesome and allows one to have mote freedome.

I just saw this thread! I've been trying to contact the seller two days ago but no reply so far. I have asked Jon if he could call the seller as I couldn't get the line from Canada. I didn't get an email reply either.

I believe the top was made by Corning on these, but the range was all Frigidaire. Later Corning had their own brand of ranges. My aunt had a Frigidaire cooktop in her house from 1975 that had this same top and pattern for the burners and I think it said CORNING somewhere on it.

This is a pretty cool stove, ahead of its time for sure.

Corning Smooth Top Electric Cook-Tops

Corning was actually first to build ST CTs starting in the later 60s, they started with several different portable cooking appliances and then started selling built-in CTs and a 30" range built by Frigidaire with an exclusive Corning designed and built ST CT.

Tonight, I assisted at a presentation of the Touch 'N' Cook technology by no one else than Dr Frigidaire himself!

He had to do a part on the 1-18...

And he showed me some highly controversial information on refrigerator brand ratings. ;-)

But then came the time to introduce me to the real thing!

More later...

I still haven't got back home, I had to visit my friend who found the range for me! It was getting late and he offered to stay I'll post more as soon as I come back home!

One last picture before I left Boston!

I don't know about belts

except some parents used them on their kids rear-ends. lol. Whatever belt-driven

dishwashers do, it must be nirvana. ?

I didn't realize the set was in storage...such a great looking Thermador set.

They have aged so well, they don't look their age. It's funny, some appliances

are so well designed and look so good. Hope these work out as you planned, Jon, and

so glad you got these rarely seen CL finds.

(haha - photo of you there in front of the stove..."is dis how vee push dee buttons? Yah, das is how vee push dee buttons". LOL.

I just got back home. It's much colder here than it was in Boston when I left Saturday! I had to stop to visit two other friends after I left Boston. I really had a great weekend thanks to all great friends that helped making this possible!

Here's some information from the paperwork (it didn't come with it but a friend has it so...).  The link shows an article I found on Google Newspapers (page 19 of 24).
