Hello everybody. I am interested in the history of frontload washers. I have heard that frontload washers are new to the market. Are frontload washers new or did they just make a comeback years ago? Frigidaire claims to come out with a frontload washer in 1996. Maytag came out with the Neptune in 1997 a year later. What is the history of frontload washers?

For the EU, that were the 50s.
For the US, I think it was the just shortly before they started to die out. AFAIK Between the mid 80s and late 90s, FLs were pretty much dead in the US. And I think that mid-late 70s, some FLs were reversing.

But if you take your question by word, only one FL washer ever did dual tumble action:

(2000s)

lg washer

My mom has an lg washer that is dual tumble. It washes anything under the sun that she and I put in it, from lightly soiled blouses and wool sweaters to heavily soiled cottons and denims. I also have the matching dryer. They are red in color. Back to the washer, it has done even heavily soiled darks I.E. jeans and other hard wearing fabrics in cold water and a high-efficiency detergent. It was Gain. We also used the matching fabric softener. I couldn't believe how clean the clothes were. It was in 2008 when my mom and I did the ultimate test.

frontloads in US pre ww2

bendix came out with an automatic frontload washer around 1938-this was a small"bolt down"washer with no suspension. These early bendix washers can still be found on occaision. For many years, westinghouse was the only maker of household frontload washers in the US until~1994 when Frigidaire/Electrolux came out with their frontload and maytag introduced the Neptune in 1997.

Front load washers

Automatic front load washers were the first automatics made. Bendix introduced them before World War 2. The first were bolt down machines that did not wash or spin all that well. They tumbled in one direction. Westinghouse made front load washers from the 50's up to through the 80's. They were pretty much the only ones here in the US until the 90's. Seems that the US was one of the only places that top loaders were more popular until now.

Back around 1993, WCI replaced the motors from one direction to a reverse tumble single belt drive on the Frigidaires. They also made Kenmore,  Gibson, and Signature models. They only changed the motor and,if I remember correctly, they may have just changed the tubs from porcelain to stainless. They still had the oval window .

In 1995, the new models came out with an entirely different, fresh new look and design. Before Neptune. Before GE, Before LG,before Whirlpool.  Had they put a little more effort in design and features, I believe that Elux could have become a nicer machine. However, imp, they failed tremendously. Cheap parts, bad spiders, bad pumps, no button catchers and bad frequency of repair records. I spoke to a few of their so called EOs and they had absolutely no answers to my questions on improvements of design. At LG, the reps were so full of important answers and have continued improvements on their line. My latest being top with a square window. I have to pick it up this weekend with a red model as,well. Would have grabbed them yesterday but thetes a tropical storm here and it was too wet to go get them. They're both wrapped in plastic and indoors. The Duets work fine except the dryer is not heating. At least it isn't the mother board. Could be either the thermometer couple or element. Everything else works fine.  I reconnected the LG dryer to use till I repair the Duet. Then, I plan on selling them on CL for $1200. They're in pristine condition but a bit boring to watch. I guess I'm just spoiled watching the LGs turbulent, active, vigorous tumbles with recirculation spray.
