I was at Wal-Mart in the US today and saw that gain had its own line of pods now, I only saw 2 scents available which were Original and Lavender moonlight or something along those lines.

I picked up a bag of the Original ones which look like Ariel Pods from the UK if you've ever seen them (green on the bottom and white/blue chambers on top). They are probably too strong for most loads but I like using highly scented detergents and softeners for my sheets and these definitely qualify as highly scented, if not overly scented.

Take a look! The Gain website also has a little bit of information about them but basically they are just a very highly scented version of Tide pods. Same shape, and the detergent mixture on the bottom appears to be less dense than it is on the Tide pods, i'll have to put them to the test and see which version works better, though i'm sure Tide would win. I've always thought Gain was more about the smell than excellent stain removal, but I guess we'll see.

Got one of the Gain pods attached as a sample on a package of Tide. Tried it on a load of knock around things like old T shirts and jeans. For openers, the entire first floor of my house smelled of the things as they were washing and the residual fragrance is simply too much even over a week later. So I rewashed everything in Tide Free and Gentle - amazing there is still some slight Gain scent remaining...

So they may be fine for some, but way too much for me. I just can't imagine adding more scent with a Gain dryer bar to boot!!!

But then to each their own...

Side note, looks like Tide simply clean and fresh is now in the Northeast. Our local "Big Y" market features it starting Friday at $2.99 for the 50 ounce size. Perhaps will give it a try though I prefer powders. Just want to test out the scent to see if it in any way resembles the Tide I grew up with. What are the odds????

Lol, angus

After what you said previously about the Gain Flings am surprised you even tried them. ;)

I had a similar experience with Oxydol's "Smells So Good" scent. After using it on some quilted placemats, the smell was overwhelming whatever food was being served, and it took about three washings in a neutral detergent to get rid of it. [this post was last edited: 1/22/2014-21:10]

Gain Detergent Has Been About Scent

For years now, so the news these "flings" or whatever pack a powerful whiff shouldn't surprise.

Gave two of the bottles that came with our job lot of Gain lavender detergent away to family members. Some persons show up at family events with food, I bring that plus detergent. *LOL* Older relations on tight budgets are happy to see both! My aunts in particular love Gain, so that's me for you.

Problem with Gain is if you use large doses you'll never get shot of that scent. Worse P&G's patented technology fixes the perfumes to last days, weeks or even months after laundering. Same thing with Tide scented detergents to an extent since both leave a whiff that takes several launderings to get rid of, and even then not always. Since you are locked into dosage it would be wise to use as full a load as possible. At least that way all the scent has something to work upon.

Not crazy, everyone has a different scent threshold. I too actually like the scent of original Gain. The issue is with the strength which has steadily increased over the years to near suffocating intensity. I still have two or three boxes of Gain with Bleach from the late 90's that I hoard - great scent and not too overpowering. Funny thing is that back then, that scent was considered strong. Now compared to everything else out there, it is pretty tame!

If that pod hadn't been attached to something, I probably wouldn't have tried it. But since it was free, I figured why not?

I'm sure I will buy them at least once, just to try something new, but I doubt I will stick with them- like Tide pods, which I have bought exactly twice. I bought a bag of Ajax powder pods and they were pretty blah. I have used the Purex pods and they were terrible, and I used Arm and Hammer powder pods and they were nothing special. I like the idea of pods but the only ones I have found to work well are Tide, and they are EXPENSIVE.

Tried them for the first time today

On 2 whites loads and a load of darks with some Downy unscented softener and after drying (without dryer sheets) I think they would smell a tad bit strong for someone with allergies but for me they are not overpowering for day clothes. I don't really like the smell of original Gain anyway though... so maybe when I try the purple ones they will smell better.

In terms of my detergent preferences I don't really have one that I stick with, I will use almost anything because my clothes aren't that dirty most of the time anyway so I don't need anything more than basic detergent, and although I tend to use liquid detergent, I will use powders occasionally.

As for pods, I like the Tide version, and the Gain version for the most part so far but was never convinced to buy any other brand of pods since most look like regular detergent sealed inside a tiny packet by itself, with the 3 chamber Tide pods there are 3 different liquids inside, all very thick (concentrated) too.

Plus, I have never used a Tide product that wasn't able to remove fresh stains by itself without any more than half a cap so I feel I should continue to trust that Tide pods will work the same, if not better.

I guess the strong scent issue with Gain would be more for people who have newer washers made after 2010 with water restriction, seeing how rinse performance is very lacklustre with some newer washers, I personally never had a detergent scent that was overpowering when used in moderation in any of my traditional top load washers. There was one time where my mother was visiting and decided to put a FULL cap of 2X concentrated Gain original in with the whites and you better believe it was overpowering! Not only overpowering, but made all my clothes very itchy. I'll be sure and hide any Gain I have by the washer next time she visits.

Commercial

I saw a commercial for these yesterday, or part of one anyway. Sounded like they were available at any BIG-LOTS. Or you could get a free sample there or something. Anyone else see this commercial?

I tried the Cascade w/Gain, Never again! The scent was so strong the dishes tasted like Gain, and the dishwasher stunk for at least a month. They didn't really smell like original Gain, similar, but far stronger and not at all pleasant.

The whole concept of dishwasher detergent or hand washing liquid that is scented with Gain is just plain silly. They are dishes for heavens' sake!!! Can you imagine washing your plastic containers with a Gain scented product? I can't imagine how your food would taste!!

Exactly. The dishes, especially plastic, tasted like Gain. I do like Gain manual dish liquid, I find it works as well as Dawn, but much cheaper. Nice scents as well, my favorites are Lavender and Island fresh.

I picked up a bag of 31 at Walmart today, in the Moonlight Breeze scent. I expected them to be a tad cheaper than Tide Pods, but unfortunately not. $8.97 for 31 "Flings", $8.97 for 31 Pods. I have only run one load with them, and coming out of the washer, they had a pleasant, although very light, scent. The scent seemed to change and get a bit stronger in the dryer, but still pleasant, and light as far as Gain products go. They seemed to perform as well as Tide pods, on a lightly soiled load of whites and light colors in warm water. Not sure if I will buy them regularly, they are quite expensive. Something interesting to note, I ran down to Dollar General just a few minutes ago for some cleaning supplies (and hopefully a bottle of Tide Simply Clean and Fresh in the Daybreak fresh scent) And noticed they have both scents of Gain Flings. Sitting beside them, DG Home brand pods, in two different scents. Will post a picture, note the prices of the Flings in relation to the $8.97 I paid at WallyWorld.

I washed my bed linens and comforter in Gain pods on Saturday, and the scent is still prominent---although it has morphed into something I'm not too fond of. Glad I only purchased a trial bag of 5 pods. It's true: Gain really is all about the scent.
