With all the compactor talk lately it seemed fitting to get this one on the film scan list. GE makes a pitch for their version of the trash compactor, circa 1969.

Note, this film had gone completely red but I was able to pull a little color out. Still fun to watch, though.

Well Corey, thank you for that video...

Best "talking trash" that I have ever seen...

And surely the brand of compactor I would have bought if I needed one and had my own home (though I was very too young too have) that many years ago...

GE

We had the Hotpoint version purchased in 1977. It had the same round bucket. It's amazing most people don't use these any more. They were very popular at one time!

GEs own round a bucket compactor

Great video Corey thanks for posting, this video couldn’t be that old that compactor didn’t come out until around 74 or a little later.

When whirlpool introduced their compactor in late 69 GE introduced one at the exact same time that was a complete copy of the whirlpool compactor apparently Somebody fled whirlpool with the plans and GE built the exact same compactor as whirlpool quickly filed suit and a judge blocked GE from selling the compactor for a while, but then allowed Sales of the GE and the whirlpool identical compactor to proceed. GE eventually lost the court case in a couple years and had to discontinue the whirlpool design.

That’s when GE came up with the compactor in your video which was a pretty crappy design. Overall, I thought this was easily the worst of all the different trash compactor that were sold. They had lots of problems with door hinges, and the buckets falling off. It was just kind of an unworkable Design, it was funny how they say it was smaller than the previous compactor. Well, it’s the same 15 inch width, but it is more shallow front to back, but you don’t usually need room behind the compactor when it’s under a cabinet.

This round bucket, GE compactor did have a little more compacting force, then whirl pools however a round bucket obviously holds a whole lot less stuff than the big rectangular bin in whirlpools compactor, and the one with the greatest capacity was the 18 inch wide KitchenAid compactors.

GE continued building this round bucket compactor through the 80s but then got out of the compactor business and came out with a 12 inch wide one which was made by another company and sold under various names.

John, thanks for the date correction. I admit, I'm not well versed in compactors and the modern internet is severely lacking in this regard. Someone had written 1968 on the film can, but that didn't make sense.

But stay tuned, I have Whirlpool's Trash Masher film scanned and at the ready. -C

OMG! That’s the compactor my grandparents had!

One of my earliest appliance-related memories was of my fascination with the trash compactor at my grandparent’s old house. I don’t remember much about it, just that it had a round bin, a swinging door, and a chrome start/stop knob. I also remember there being a gap in between the top of the door and the bottom of the control panel, through which one could see the ram as it moved up and down. As such, I had wondered what brand it was, as I’d kind of like to get one for the collection eventually. Everything about the machine in the video lines up with my memory. Theirs was quite a bit later than the model in the video (probably from the 80’s) but was still the same design internally. I’ve attached a photo of what I remember theirs looking like.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane,
