hum

was this really put out by GE if so why is that gal puting her laundry into a frigidaire filtrator dryer? ha ha

GEs IDEA OF THE FUTURE

Some good predictions but a lot of misses.

Waterless ultrasonic cleaning DWs, all though we are getting close to waterless LOL.

Self-closing windows

Video phones where you see the person you are talking to.

And the biggest laugh The [ missile defense systems ] even after hundreds of billions of dollars spent we are no safer from atomic attack than we were in 1954.

I love how they say, "You'll have a telephone in your hand!!", and the guy pulls out this clunky looking thing with a big thick cord attached.

I was kind of struck when he mentioned TV's would be an inch thick and the DVR thing. They hit those nails on the head. Wow.

The kitchen of the future is a bit funky. Oddly enough, LG does sell a fridge with a built in monitor, so they got it half right.

Wow everything became a reel item but that dishwasher.

western electric video phone was made and sold but not a hit
Self closing windows are still made but are used for skylights.

But the video phone is here -

iPhone has Face Time video phone, I'm sure other smartphones have it as well. With a broadband internet connection, you can Skype (or similar video chat) - video phone.

Didn't GE spend millions on developing a clothes washer that used ultrasonic cleaning? That was a big FAIL as I read after they gave up.

Your right they did have the washer and a dishwasher. I seen it on I got a secret. The secret was they are doing it now it worked at the end of the show they open it and things are clean. I wonder what happen to them units. This was live tv so no trick play at all on that part. The units where in view even when the adverts where being done.

The video phone was also used but the price of it made it not worth the time to use it.

But nobody predicts the future anymore?

It seems to me that our visions of the future haven't changed in ~60 years. There are no longer articles int the Sunday paper colour supplements telling us what the world will be like in 50 years. All we ever hear is gloom and doom and global catastrophe. It would be nice to live with the hope of a boundless bountiful future but nobody thinks that way anymore. My parents turned 18 in 1945, the first generation not to face conscription to fight and it seems that they have lived through a charmed time of almost seamless increasing prosperity without major interruptions of war (with some significant exceptions but of the sake of the argument...) or economic meltdowns in the western world. I wonder if when I'm 83 yo I will be able to look back with the same memories?

Actually ultrasonic dishwashers were developed but not released because they were expensive to build and maintain and there was no huge advantage to them over conventional machines - sort of an answer to a question nobody asked. Ultrasonic cleaning devices are in common use in research labs and industry. I recently cleaned up an old oscilloscope plug-in module in one. They work amazingly well.

ULTRASONIC DISHWASHERS

The main problem was you still had to wash the loose food and grease off the dishes, so an US DW would either have to fill all the way up or spray the dishes with hot water and you still have to use detergent and then you still have to rinse the food and detergent away. And then you have to dry the dishes. While US waves may help loosen some food soils it was never deemed worth the bother for home DWs. About all the same problems make US clothes washers equally impracticable.

Ultrasonic cleaning......

Ultrasonic cannot and never will do the job of soap/detergent and water and not only for the grease.......
My father is jeweler and goldsmith, and has in his laboratory a jewelry washer that works with ultrasonic vibrations, the machine "wash" the items in hot water and soap though!
I can say it does not work that much, rather, the action is nothing but a pan and it is a pretty stupid thing, and the only way it do something is thank to the hot water and soap,In fact my father use this just to "soak" the dirt, then agitate them in a strainer into soapy water and then pass items through an high pressure steam jet that actually take off the last part of dirt in the internal narrow parts, it also works to dry them....
So for obvious reasons I think the ultrasonic alone would be a pretty stupid thing, and anyway a pretty unuseful feature also......

Don't most cell phones these days have two cameras for video calls in them? Mine (a Samsung Wave) sure does!

About self-closing windows: I think they may become more popular with these smart/intelligent home concepts. Like: just press the Good Night button and all doors and windows close and lock automatically. There's even a whole computerized house in Switzerland, in which people live and are filmed live via web cams. I think it's called Futur Life or something. And btw, there is a second house for the family to go to if they don't want to be filmed...

And ultrasonic dishwashers? Just to to appliancist.com to see recent prototypes.

I know the skylight windows that self close are the best thing out there. Any drop of rain they shut. But as for the main windows I would see no use for it. Unless the window was high up or the person was unable to open a window for other reasons.

I look at this and not anything is new total it has been done before in the pass. A car that can fly done a car that is a boat done robot lawnmower done so I think now where just stuck in repeat. Just look at ronco he takes old items brings them back as new never before seen set it and forget it. But to be trw it has been out before. I think we lost the way of making new things and just like to add to old things now days.
