After a great deal of work, I finally got the GE Wall Refrigerator up on the wall and running. Had to remount the header on which it hangs, replace the cold control, rehinge one of the doors and do a complete wash down and clean out. It runs like a champ. Of all my appliances this is one of my favorites. Its also the one that has cost me the most money to aquire and keep running. This was the unit that I got from John L in a trade. It actually has parts from 3 different wall refrigerators that I have had thru the years. This has the best of the shelves, gaskets, grill, etc. Its due for a repaint, but I just dont have the energy for that yet! Sometime soon I hope........

Very nice Jimmy! I only ever saw one of these in use in a home years ago, just thought it was the most interesting thing ever.

very nice

I love that refrigerator!! How unique! I also couldn't help but notice that GE top-loading built-in dishwasher! I wish I had a DW like that model! Thanks for sharing some cool pics!

A house up the street from me

Had one of those refrigerators. Was always intrigued that the 'fridge' could 'hang on the wall'. Of course, the whole kitchen was GE....the dishwasher, washer, dryer and stove..

Wonderful Unit

Jimmy, what a great unit that is. I remember that same unit in the same color my sister and brother in law had when they moved into her new home. The unit ran well and used it for a few years. They disposed of it when they remodeled the kitchen under my protest. I told them to keep the unit as a spare and put it downstairs for extra use. But they used the excuse of being an energy waster. Wrong! But you can't argue the point as you would be wasting your breath. But now years later when I bring up the subject, they new they made a mistake in tossing it out and wish they had kept it, as it was a unique piece and it worked fine. Oh well, but enjoy your piece as it is truly one of a kind!

What a beauty, Jimmy!

Now, that was from when GE made really innovative appliances.

Why do you want to repaint it? Looks fine from here.

Jimmy...

That is AWESOME. I remember Dan's adventures with his and these are beyond cool. I never heard, seen, or had any idea of these things until someone mentioned one or linked to an ebay auction on one last year. It's bizarre and cool.

As you may remember, I have a 1963 GE standard fridge that still runs insanely well (with flip over ice maker no less!!) and when we moved became our back house fridge. We bought it from a recycling center, and used it as our everyday fridge for 10 years, not one single problem, and it's still going along. I am a big fan of GE units.

That said, what year is that? I got my year by calling up GE and giving them the serial number. I can't believe these wall hanging units were made for more than a year or two.

My guess is 1961, but I have no idea. Dan, do you know the year on yours?

GE wall refrigerators were made from 1955 thru 1960. I believe mine to be a 1955 model but Im still debating that with John L. Mine is pink inside which denotes it to be a 1955 model along with metal door shelves in the refrigerator, only a single light in the frig section and a drain from the freezer to the frig to aid defrost water cleaning. The later models had two lights in the fridge, no drain, a different condenser assembly, a white interior and plastic door shelves in the refrig. Every one of these I have ever seen has had a replacement compressor as most went bad in the first few years of manuf. GE was actually replacing them for free to the original owners for a period of time, even out of warranty. All the servicemen I have talked with that remember these HATED working on them because of the bad compressors. From the time I first saw an ad for one I have always wanted one. The main problem with them now is leaks from the aluminum liners in the freezer sections from insulation getting wet and corroding the tubing lines. All things considered, they are fabulous units and finding a good running one is now difficult. I love these, and as long as I can make one work and or repair it I will always have one around. I just LOVE this design.......what a glamorous refrigerator!
