Going thru the 1972 Maytag A806/DE806 set

I posted some pics of the Maytag set I had just picked up a little while ago. The little old lady who owned them for 37 years was worried that they'd go to the junk. She wanted someone to take them, fix them and give them a home for a long time to come. Seeing how she cared for them, I'm not going to disappoint her... Here's the set PRE-going thru, before I even touched them! She kept them clean.

I was opening up the washer when the co-worker who'd picked them up told me "You'll be pleased." I asked why and he said that she'd mentioned something about keeping the washer clean "inside and out". Yeah, right... How many customers say that? Then I pulled the panel. WOW!!! She'd opened it up every so often and wiped it out. Look at what I found with the panel off! She even got the INSIDE of the panel!

I ended up changing the timer motor, injector assy and the water level switch as it sometimes the buttons wouldn't stay pushed in. The tub top needed a little cleaning too. Oh, yeah... I changed the tub light and had to tighten the tub band clamp screws...

Did I mention that she'd made sure the tub shipping brace was installed BEFORE we hauled it away?

Dan and I ran her and Woo Hoo! Nice and quiet with that rythmic 'Thrum-thrum' that all healthy Helicals make. Yes, Gary and Toggles, there's the tub light shot. I shot some top up video of a quick fill, wash, drain and spin and spray rinse.

Now, on to the dryer...

A little bit more to do here but nothing really unexpected. Showed Dan the take apart for cleaning. We really went to town but this one deserved it!

I wanted to show Dan how to clean and lube the main drum shaft. Nice and clean. Time to start re-assembling this jigsaw puzzle!

Remounted the drum and installed the new front seal. This step is a MUST for any HOH go thru! Unless, you LIKE replacing shorted elements...

Almost ready to play.. errrmmm... TEST...

While the seal was curing, we cleaned and re-assembled the rear and of course new belts.

Re-mounted the cabinette and crossed our fingers. Bingo! Quiet as only a healthy HOH can be. Here they are side by side after the go thru. I swear they're smiling. THIS is the picture I'm going to send to the previous owner so she can see that the kids are in good hands!

Here's the nite shot. This set is so cool. Oh, BTW, I DID change the belts on the washer. From the look of the numbers on the belt, I'd swear that if they weren't the original belts, they were pretty close. Here's to the little old lady who loved them for 37 years and cared enough to want them to keep on going! Thank you, Madam!

My hats off to you guys - what a great set to clean up! I love that she got out the Phillips screw driver and took off the front panel to clean the inside of the machine. I doubt anyone else in the State of Nevanda would go to lengths to keep a machine clean!

Also love the water shot of the washer. I almost thought that the light lens was sitting in the bottom of the tub ;-)

I should trade fabric softener cups with you. Mine is bright blue and the filter has faded. Just the opposite of yours. I love the sound, I love to wash it wash and I love to take the laundry out of the dryer and marvel at how clean everything is.

The timer motor on the washer was dead. All she knew is that the timer wouldn't advance and her son told her that the washer was SO old, the timer wasn't repairable or replaceable. She ended up with a set of top load Whirltags. I'll bet nowhere near as quiet, too. I'm almost thinking I shouldn't send her the picture. She may want them back or atleast kill the son...

I had a friend of mine who had a set just like this years ago. He would wash and WAX his Corvet AND the Maytags in his garage. They were both beautiful.

Hmmmm.....I distinctly remember doing that particular job. Hell, I even have the old timer motor to prove it, lol

Thanks again for showing the ropes on disassembly/reassembly on these great dryers! Next week or so I'll perform this on all 3 of my HOH's.....at the same time. God knows I've squirreled away enough parts......
