Mr. Keith Ellison was elected the first Muslim to Congress. He wants to take his oath of office with his hand on the Quran. His office has been receiving "very bigoted and racist" emails over this.
After reading this article, I looked up his site on the web and proceeded to send a positive email to his office. I wanted to send him well wishes and put something positive in his inbox. We always read about the racist and bigoted people flooding peoples inboxes. I wanted to send something positive out there. So I did, And proud that I did.
I did not forget to mention to him that this was coming from a protestant raised Arkansas white boy....that should put a smile on their faces :)

Good for you!

Supposedly we are a Christian nation only if you consider the current majoriy religion. What business does the Bible have in Government?

Perhaps he can be sworn in to office or testify, as it were, by putting his hand on his peter. Which is where the origin of the word testify comes from...

This aint a theocracy, y'all!

LOL. Perhaps he should get a Quran. It means something to him. The Bible may mean nothing.

.... we just may need to add a proviso page to it that says "No writing or cenceptual issued derived or any other interpretation of same within this text may be taken to mean that violence or hatred or anti-anyone is acceptable behavior in America. Similary there is more than one way to a goal/ path and rigid fixed thinking is not allowed.

That should work. If it does we can then add it to the Bible for the other swear-ins!

P.S. I am not prejudiced. I hate EVERYONE. It makes life so much easier. JUST KIDDING!

How sickening!

Theocracy is right! And curiously, the ones who should be the most peaceful, accepting and tolerant - as their savior taught - are the ones who become the most militant and evil when they feel their stranglehold on the status quo is challenged.

Here is is website/contact info, take a moment to drop an email to show support - not necessarily for him or his religious preference, but for the first ammendment rights of everyone in the country.

Swear Schmere

Tom thank you for doing that! I'm going to send an email myself, thanks for the link Greg as well.

It is really sad that this is even mentioned as an issue. Who cares what he is sworn in on, if it was me I'd have my hand on a 1947 Frigidaire Washer Owners manual. It would mean more than someone else's bible. Actually come to think of it the whole idea of using a religious artifact to "swear" in an elected official is probably a bad practice anyway.

Besides let the people of the 5th congressional district decide where I know most of us couldn't care less!

I think this is just another made-up outrage. I'm not a religious person, but when in doubt about issues like this, I ask my 81 year old VERY Irish Catholic mother for guidance.

She thinks it's perfectly acceptable that a person of a different religion swear in on the sacred book of their religion. Being very secure in her faith, she is not threatened by the idea of someone having a different set of beliefs, and doesn't buy into this "Christan persecution" nonsense. (although she is still trying to get her only son to darken the door of a church, LOL)

As I have said a million times before, and will probably say at least ten million times again before I die, I wish people would just mind their own business when it came to issues like this. God comes to all of us in different ways. One size does NOT fit all, especially in matters of faith.

Bite me, Dennis Prager......

The U.S. Constitution, Article VI

"The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States."

I sent off an email as well...

Its not up to the goverment to set up what you get sworn in on... Like robert and others, i would much rather be sworn in with what I wanted... Not what they wanted... Mind you i am a christian and i firmly beleive in the Methodist thing "Open Hearts, Open Minds and Open Doors".... SO if he wants to swear in on the quarn, so be it... I my self: The Guide for Gay Christians...
