In and among the preparations for the move and the insanity of work, Ross reminded me that I hadn't actually announced the fact that Will, Frank and I will, in fact, be moving to San Francisco. Will moves the weekend of the 8th of September, and I move the weekend of the 28th. I apologize for the heretofore grapevine communiqué.

This decision comes on the heels of a unique opportunity for Will and me to relocate, and since the opportunity for Will to transfer was rare--and the timing was pretty okay in terms of my job--we decided to go with it. Frank, world traveler that he is, is happily able to adapt to this.

So, yes--this is the reason that I've been thinning my collection down to the ones I absolutely want to keep, and I've been shuffling others. We're not getting rid of the house here in Tucson, so some of the appliance kids can stay. However, some had to scoot, because it was becoming nearly impossible to skirt the machines in order to get to smaller items in the back of the sheds. (I know, I know, that actually sounds ideal, but you'd be surprised when you factor-in appliance non-aficionados.)

Unfortunately, I won't have the ability to collect appliances much bigger than the occasional table-fan or toaster in San Francisco (maybe I should branch-out into Corelle?), but I plan to continue to come back to Tucson...and, of course, to live vicariously through all of you, as I do now, with your fantastic finds and fun pics.

I'd like to thank all of you for a wonderful life while in Tucson, especially my close friends here. I can't believe how blessed I've been to get to share in your lives, and at the incredible things we've been able to experience. While I'm excited about the move, I know that life will not be the same, and there is no replacement for you.

I'd also like to express my gratitude to all of you who came to the Tucson Wash-Ins and shared with us your wonderful, dynamic, funny, knowledgeable, and fantastic selves. I really treasure the memories we've made.

Nate

I didn't know Tucson was on the water!

All the best of luck to you, Nate (and Will) - you'll have the time of your life in S.F., enjoy every minute of it!

The Corelle is a great idea, I saw some very intriguing pieces at the store the other day - check out the 28 oz. soup bowls, yeah baby!

Nate , you little Dickens!!! How exciting!!!

If you get a bit worn down by the pace (or even if you don't,
but start jonesing for some pre 1985 action -watch your tongue, veg-o-matic- ) you only need scoot up the roadway
to the Cool Gay Realm , and I'll hook you right up!!!!
Do you know exactly where your living yet?

Nate you know that I wish you, Will, and Frank all the best in this move!! I have never been to San Francisco but I have heard it is a fun city. Not to worry, we will think of something neat for you to collect.

All the best, boys.

Enjoy your youth. Don't let the lifestyle overly pull you in. Pace yourself. I'm sure you will keep your centerdness and Arizona charm. (Seriously, not being sarcastic at all).

This is your time to make memories and to explore the big bad city.

Wishing you all the good things life has to offer. I'm sure you won't forget us on the site!

All I can say is that I will certainly will miss you all. I appreciate all the help you have given me and look forward to your return visits. All the best of luck to you, Will, and
Frank.

Ross

Hi Nate, congratulations to you, Will and Frank on the move! Don't worry about the washers, with us around there will always be more machines in the future when you are ready to start collecting again. Please keep us posted.

Thanks so much for the warm wishes, guys!!

I didn't know Tucson was on the water! -- We didn't take you to the west end of town, did we? Oh well, next time. ;-)

The Corelle is a great idea, I saw some very intriguing pieces at the store the other day - check out the 28 oz. soup bowls, yeah baby! -- I saw those at the antique mall, in snowflake! What is it with those bowls??

If you get a bit worn down by the pace (or even if you don't,
but start jonesing for some pre 1985 action
-- Well, I do tend to like them older... :-P

you only need scoot up the roadway to the Cool Gay Realm , and I'll hook you right up!!!! -- That sounds fantastic! I'll look forward to meeting you in propria persona, Darrel!

Do you know exactly where your living yet? -- Yes, where Clayton connects with Market as Market heads up the hill--in a nice little apartment overlooking the Castro.

Nate, best wishes to ya'll. -- Thanks very much, Steve! Yes, I'm looking forward to seeing some of the intriguing appliances that seem to surface in California periodically. We must, of course, transport them back to Tucson for further research and testing.

Not to worry, we will think of something neat for you to collect. -- Thanks so much, Terry :-) I know we'll find something fun. Maybe hair dryers? Oh, wait, no hair; reference picture above. Sigh. ;-P

Pace yourself. I'm sure you will keep your centeredness and Arizona charm. -- LOL Thanks, Steve. Don't worry; the "scenery" of San Francisco didn't even make my list; I'm not that much of a wild-child, and I like the city for everything else it has to offer. I do like the comfortable vibe of the Castro, though. It's weird and wonderful to hold hands on the street and not have anyone particularly care. Believe me, I won't forget you all--I may be moving geographically, but I'm staying right here :-)

I appreciate all the help you have given me and look forward to your return visits. -- Thanks for being such a great friend, Ross; I'll definitely look forward to seeing you again soon, whether it's on visits back to Tucson, or visits on your way through California! :-)

Don't worry about the washers, with us around there will always be more machines in the future when you are ready to start collecting again. -- Thanks so much, Robert :-) I know there will be a groove to get back into once I'm able to collect larger goodies again. Plus, it's nice that some of them can still stay at the house. Just think, vacations back to Tucson with vintage laundry! It'll be very therapeutic. And I can have dinner and <s>clean</s> <s>wash</s> <s>do</s> load the dishes in the Roto-Rack! :-P

Nate, Clayton & Market is really a great spot. Castro one direction, Haight the other, and easy access to Twin Peaks when you are really in the mood to freeze. As for the scenery, I find the men south of Market much more interesting than the Castro clones when I do get to The City but I got bored with that whole scene many many years ago. There's a great thrift store in the Mission but haven't been there in years. Hard to miss, it has a giant old "17 Reasons Why" sign on top of the building. I can't remember what the 17 reasons claim was about, but am thinking it might have been a long gone brand of coffee.

Welcome to the Bay Area! You'll find plenty to fill the void that leaving the vintage washers behind has created for you.

Nate
Welcome to San Francisco. You will find gay men living in every district of the City. I live just south of the top of Market Street in the fog most of the time. The thrift store with the sign "17 Reasons Why" was for an old time furniture and appliance store at that location until the building of the BART system which tore up Mission Street. The store was called Redlick's. The other two appliance stores on Mission were Lachman Brothers and Young Brothers. Frigidaire appliances were sold at all three stores. Washers will be hard to find in the City. Most are late model Kenmore, Whirlpool, and General Electric. Once in awhile you'll find a classic on Craigslist. Frigidaire was a big seller in the East Bay and Peninsula with the distribution center in San Leandro.
Once you're settled, maybe the members from the Bay Area could meet.

Lucky you Nate. San Fran was near the top of my list to relocate to. I hear there is a certain number of them there "gays" livin' there,... so it must be good. ;o)
Good luck with the job transfer and the apartment, too.
Now, don't knock the Correlle. Not that I have been avidly collecting, it just seems to come accross my path.
some recent finds and they were free. so 70s. I love these tiny bowls. (so cute)

I forgot to add that I too am most likely "headed westward". Though not as far as SanFran. Back to the midwest from Vermont.

Congratulations, Nate, and best wishes for many years of happiness there.

P.S. Whatever you do, stay away from the Cool Gay Realm! Bad juju! Bad juju!

Nate...

SF is so much fun, lots to see and do.

For the love of God---go to Castro for Halloween!!!

It's a riot of fun!

Best of luck to you and yours....

ooops

I didn't see you will be right near Castro!

Sorry...trying to speed read while at work!

Happy Trails~~

Hey James, thanks for the history lesson on the "17 Reasons Why" signage. I think Lachman Bros. had outlets in other parts of the Bay Area. I'm pretty sure there was one in the SJ area too.

Nate & Maytagmom, if I've been paying proper attention lately, the city of SF has decided that the Castro will not be the location of this year's Halloween event. Apparently the thing has gotten too big and too many non-gay troublemakers have been showing up in recent years. I haven't heard anything definite about an alternate location but they better get one nailed down soon. I tend to think that a good number of people will still congregate in the Castro anyway unless the city has a plan to discourage or prevent it.

wow Nate Congrats to you!

Thats very cool and I am very happy for you! All the best in your move, and to your future!
