Hey fellas,

Sorry to be a stranger, but I need some help. I just dropped a bottle of vintage tid-y bowl and it exploded over my hard wood floors. I've been scrubbing for over an hour and while I've made progress, it's still there. Any suggestions short of refinishing?

Looks like you needed the vintage plastic bottle versions

Once that stuff has penetrated the finish (which is what it looks like) there's nothing you can do except sand down the floor and refinish it.

Worth a try, anyway......

I make no promises, but I am pretty sure it won't be worse if you try this:  Rubbing alcohol.  Start with a few drops on a cotton ball or paper towel.  90% might be more effective, but if the 70% is all you have in the house...try.

Best of luck.

Oxalic Acid

This works very well and can be used without removing the finish from the enitre floor.  Heat sun light or a sunlamp activate it more quickly.  This works well on blemishes left on finished wood from water seepage like you would expect under a plant that has been over watered.

Careful with the Clorox full strength.

I this house I stored a gallon bottle of the stuff under the master bed/bath sink. I didn't realize the bottom was cracked with a slow leak. It turned the plywood floor of the cabinet into jelly, 3/8 inch deep, in a big ring matching the outline of the bottom of the bottle. Of course it was sitting there for weeks before I noticed it, but still...

One of these days I'll fill the gouge with plastic wood, sand it and paint it, and it will be almost as good as new.

As for the blued floor... I think sanding and refinishing might be the best solution. You don't want to add stuff to it that will make it soak in more. I'd call in a professional wood floor installer/finisher and ask for their opinion. No offense, but from the looks of it that floor has gathered a number of deep scratches anyway that refinishing would fix.

Robert- that IS the bottle that broke on my floor.

30-40 year old plastic + a 6 foot fall off a shelf = blue hardwood floors... Such a shame for my floors and for the bottle. It even had the the Ty-D-bowl man in his boat on the label. Oh well.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I did contact a professional, and they suggested sanding it, then using the Wood bleach (Oxalic acid), before refinishing it. He also suggested trying fingernail polish remover, but warned it would probably take off the remainder of the finish, but might help get the blue out for now. I had planned on refinishing the hardwoods in the house eventually, but that was further down on my list of things to do. I guess I may have to move it up on the priorities... :/
