Help with a Miele W5748

Hi,

I've just moved house and have inherited a Stainless Steel Miele W5748. I've been using it for about a week without any problems apart from an odd clicking noise which seems to come from the detergent dispenser. Usually only occurring for a few seconds when it starts up.

I washed some towels today and it sounded like the final spin was slightly suds locked, altho i didn't go into the room to look. It span at around 800 the entire final spin rather than ramping up to 1500 it then finished and bleeped to say it was done, however the door would not open. I turned it off and then on again and then the door release button worked.

I then went to wash a second load. It let me change the programme, no errors codes etc but the start stop button it not glow green as usual, it bleeps when you press it but the machine does not start. The door is now locked and will not open (unless using the pulley near the drain pump) Any ideas?

I would

Work the door release handle at the bottom. Try opening the door using the handle and when it is open push the yellow “string” back towards the lock.
When the door is shut the start button flashes green and if the door is open the start button does not flash green.

The lock may need cleaning with isopropyl alcohol.
Don’t slam this door as the lock is plastic and it can break.

Thanks richnz for your advice. That makes sense that it's the door lock system. It doesn't seem to recognise that the door is in fact locked. I've called Miele and they want £130 call out, plus parts plus additional labour charge of £75 per hour. And the next available engineer appointment in Central London in Jan 14th!

Considering I've no idea of the history of the machine, how old it is and how well its been treated i'm not sure I want to spend upwards of £300? I've made the appointment but might cancel down the road.

The weired clicking sound from the drawer might just be the water inlet diverter going into position.
It does that multiple times during the cycle and depending on where it is and where it has to go thta take a few seconds and produce some audible sounds.

When you said it sounded sudslocked and didn't open at the end of the cycle, my first thought was a clogged pump venting pipe.
That is a verry small pipe going from the pump to the drawer to vent any air trapped in the pump so that it can drain effectivley.
These often clogg when only liquid detergent and low temps were used.

But the door switch not recognizing position seems odd.
But correct me if I am wrong, as long as the machine does not have a drum light, the machine should not stay switched on when the door is opened, right?

You could check the operation time counter to see how much it has been used to better judge if the machine is worth saving.
But for that the door would have to be closed AFAIK. You can try it anyway though.

Close the door, turn the machine off.
Hold the start button.
Turn it on.
Start should beginn to flash rapidly.
Once it stopped flashing, immediatley press start 3 times and hold it on the third time.
Once start comes back on immediatley release.
Now you should be in service mode.
Using the 2 side buttons beneath the display for scrolling, find the menu for operating hours and confirm that with the middle button functioning as ok.

These machines usually can live 10k hours before major failures. If its close to that, sell it for cheap.
If not, it might be worth keeping.

I think you might of confirmed that it is the door locking system. Even when I close the door and try and access the service menu it will not go into that mode. The machine seems to think the door is open when it is not which would explain why the start button will not glow green so I can go ahead and start the button.

It does flash green rapidly as you suggested it would but after three presses and holding it in on the third it doesn't go green.

I wonder if It's worth looking at a repair man other than Miele to replace the door lock system. It might be a cheaper option?

check the lock

Look if there are any obvious broken pieces.
How brave/handy are you?

You can pull the lock out without a full disassembly.
You need a T20 torx screwdriver/bit and a small screw driver.

No obvious signs of any broken pieces and the door still locks shut and will not open until the orange pulley is tugged. It seems the machine just isn't recognising that the door is shut and locked. There is an audible clunk once the lever is pulled and the door opens.

And if not you can return it for 14 days.

It looks

like the one in the photos (The one I have is a W5740).

I think all of the machines used the same lock.
