Anyone recognise this automatic, or know what it is?

The screencaps are taken from a 1971 British film, 'On The Buses', and it looks like quite a simple machine - no sign of a detergent drawer, unless it's on top.

Another picture

The door opens from left to right, but what is intriguing is that it appears to have a slight slant front - notice the shadow below the door!

Any idea lads?

Wow!

Thanks Louis, you're quick off the mark!

And fancy it being a Philips... what a coincidence after your post earlier!

Here's a picture of a later model. The detergent dispenser is indeed on top. The mother of a schoolfriend had a similar one with blue control panel, but that one had already the rotary control like in this later model. It's possible though that it wasn't a Philips, but a Ruton or Erres, the labels that Philips also used for washing machines.

Loved the series "On the buses" btw, it was broadcasted in Holland too. It's a long time ago, can't remember seeing this episode.

There were actually three full length 'On the Buses' movies between 1971 and 1973 - the first one (which is where the screencaps come from) was apparently the highest grossing film in the UK that year!

I don't know if you use bittorrents, but this film and most of the series are available for download. It's all classy stuff!

My goodness that is a coincidence.

I toyed with the idea earlier of posting the piccy below in the other philips thread.

I remember watching this episode many many years ago and wondering then what it was - now I know that it is a Philips.

I seem to remember the dippy wife - olive i think - going and buying it oh hire purchase or something and the bus driver hubby going ballistic when he sees it and insists it goes back - or something like that anyway.

Thanks for stumbling across this one, posting it, bringing back some memories and solving a mystery for me.

Cheers guys
Paul

That's a great piccy Paul,

Love how it's a modern setting, the machine looks hammered, yet it's still in use! Looks like a deluxey version too.

You're close on the film plot - the mum bought the machine on hire purchase, but it was returned as her bus driver son lost his overtime and couldn't keep up with the payments thanks to... shock horror...

FEMALE BUS DRIVERS!!! You gotta love the 1970s.

Looks like it's Philips night tonight on aw.org hehehe

Hiya Louis.

Is the machine yours at all?

I honestly can't remember where I stumbled across the image that I posted. To be quite honest it would either be here, or during a trawl on Flickr.

Can you tell us anything about the machine at all? or indeed the series? Would be particularly interested to know what model numbers these machines were as I know absolutely nothing of this particular series of machines.

They look stunning though - be great to know that one survives in good hands today.

Cheers
Paul

Paul,

No, that's not my machine. I saved it from the internet, from this album.

I actually don't know much about these machines. I love the slanted front, but IIRC the drum wasn't. As far as I remember the one the mother of my schoolfriend had spun with 750rpm, but I'm not sure about that.

I hope there is somebody who knows more about Philips washers, I always had a weak spot for them, ofcourse partly because it was a Dutch brand, although the machines weren't built overhere.

Philips inclined drum

After looking at the thread it seems I had the last of the models Philips did as an inclined drum as it had a blue fascia but the spin control was a small knob on the right. IIRC it had a separate temp control and main programme switch. (Not overly sure about the temp control though.
It was a great machine (when I was 18 and now 40) but lasted only a few months! Programmer went.
Shame, loved the Philips washers and dryers.

On a similar note, When Philips Whirlpool was the brand they were great for relaiability, quiet, fab performance...... What happenned when they lost the Philips name?? The machines with the colour co-ordinated controls were awful, noisy, and in my opinion, very BOL (Have no experience of newer WP machines)

Philips INclined drum

Foraloysius,
As you said, it was a oong time ago... My machine looked a bit more modern than the photos posted on here. I remember the Left Hand control was the programmer and on the right was the spin speed. I am sure that there was a temp control next to it because the programmer was very basic, in line with a machine that had a separate temp control. Does that make sense... IIRC the front had a slightly softer front compared to the ones on here and the fascia was different shades of blue.
Wish I had more information.
Peter

Yes Peter, that does make sense. As I said, I vaguely remember a model that had a spin control and a temperature control on the right. Don't remember any colors though.

Another thing: I don't remember these machines as having a tilted drum. As far as I remember the machine of my friend's mother didn't have a tilted drum, just a slanted front. If you look at the last picture it looks like the rubber boot is wider at the bottom than it is at the top. But as we said before, it's all a long time ago! LOL
