Supremewhirlpol why would you say that? When have I done that to anyone? I hardly post on here and I never snipped someone out of a machine. If you are talking about the GE combo from Indiana the seller didn't have a price and said to make an offer. I emailed him and told him I would give him $125 which I thought was a fair price for a machine I wanted and was close enough to me to be able to drive and get. It was only later that I found out that someone else had made him an offer. Also, my first offer was higher then your first offer of $75 so by default I got the machine. Only after you found out someone else had offered more then you had you must have made another offer because then he called me and said "listen I have multiple other offers what is your top dollar" and I said $200. Then he said that I had the top offer and that the machine was mine. I am sorry but I didn't go behind your back and offer the seller more then his set price because there was none and he was basically trying to play auction with is Craigslist ad. And if anyone on here thinks I'm full of crap feel free to go look at the original post number 32064 and you will see that supremewhirlpol says that he was out bid by someone who had offered $125. Then he went on to say "or $250" so it was you supremewhirlpol who was trying to out bid me on the machine not me trying to steal it from you. [this post was last edited: 1/27/2011-21:36]

One Reason I Rarely Post Links To CL or FleaBay Items Anymor

Is due to things unfolding like this, which sadly is becoming all to common.

After being old off by a seller of a Frigidaire unit in (IIRC) NJ, I vowed pretty much not to bother anymore. Mind you if one hadn't bothered listing the auction here, the seller would have let the thing go for the "low" price listed and or it may have simply got kicked to the curb. What was my recompense for my trouble of letting the club know about the unit? The rough side of the seller's tongue about how *I* almost caused them to loose out on getting a "fair" price.

Excuse me? Since when is it the public's deal to let vendor's know what they *should* be charging for something? Someone please tell me as I've obviously not seen the memo. *LOL*

Ebay and CL are two different things. If something is listed on CL with a price, unless wording to the effect of "make me an offer" is included, I for one am going to assume the number mentioned is what they want. Should said CL seller and myself come to an agreement, think it is pretty low for anyone to back out because someone sneaked in and is trying to muscle in.

Finally, if one may be so bold as to say, this whole unsavory sneaking about trying to top up someone else's offer/bid is IMHO partially behind the delusions of grandeur prices being seen recently.

Everyone thinks that their rusted, mouldering, clapped out and otherwise "vintage" appliance is their ticket to easy street. They join the club, come in and promote their wares, incite trouble and rarely are heard from again after they've gotten what they wanted.

Lets get something straight sudslock1 dude, I would never in my life pay $200, let alone $250 for a piece of junk, such as what you have, to which the seller was not sure if it even worked. I wasn't trying to outbid anyone. I posted the latest bid prices, based on what the seller emailed me, simply because who ever would pay such a high price for a machine, that they have never seen in person, and does not know the condition of the internals has to be out of their mind! Look like you're the one with cash to throw out! You have the machine correct?

I also find it interesting that you HAPPEN to know what event I'm referring to in post 491944. Looks like you are not as innocent as you portray yourself to be. In fact I smell the strong odor of bullsh%t coming from your side of the property. Dude?!! now your big recursive mound of bullsh%t is on my side of the property, and now I'm covered in your sh&t. Not only have you ruined my precious Faraday suit, but that GE combo that we were fighting over is covered in it too. I'd say the combo is ruined too. After I finish moving your sh^t back to your side of the property, I'm gonna need to look for a new Faraday suit. So, If you'll excuse me, I have to rent a Bobcat, and I have to look for a Faraday suit. Last time I checked Sears, Khols, or JCpenney don't sell them anymore! And after I get the one that I was wearing, that you ruined with your E^x amount pile of bullSh*t, i'm going to send you a bill of me having to get it drycleaned. lol

Oh! I see you're an upgraded member too, If you want to continue our "business" to finish, we do it through email. Otherwise, I've made my point. Sorry to hear this has happened to you: sucks big time!

All i can say from an Aussie member's perspective is that Nathan (Brisnat81), a new Aussie member Warwick and myself have a 'gentlemens' agreement that if we see something online (mainly ebay) and either one of us is interested, then we at least the other one know. That way, we're not competing and outbidding each other...what would be the point? So far, it's worked pretty well. And i suppose we're lucky that all 3 of us have differing tastes in machines.

We don't really have anything like CL here, so can't say if the situation would be any different here.

And i think it's a bit rich of the seller for you to tell HIM what price they should be! Rude!

Of course I knew what machine you were eluding to. I've only ever posted pictures of that one machine on this site and it is also only one of two machines I've purchased through links from this site. And seeing as the other one was purchased for $25 I can't see someone complaining about that. It also didn't take a genius to go back to that thread and see that you were the person who also was interested in buying the GE combo. And if you had no interest in paying anything over your one bid of $75 then I got the machine fairly by making my first offer of $125. And as the post clearly shows you didn't make it known that your bid was $75 until you were told someone else had outbid you. That means I didn't know anything about your bid. I don't know if there were other people making offers but I do know I ended up paying $200 to get the machine. I didn't steal it or rip it out of someone's hands or do anything underhanded to get that machine. Furthermore, if you think that was too much to spend then that is your opinion. I took a gamble and it turned out I did the right thing cause the machine works fine and it is in pretty good condition. I could have lost just as easily as I won but I took the gamble and I got the machine. And I have emailed you and if you want to discuss this further I will be happy to but don't attack me on here when you first off don't know me from Adam and secondly falsely accuse me of being a hypocrite when I did nothing wrong to get that GE combo. Finally, I want to know what "bull****" it is that you are smelling cause all the facts point to one conclusion. You were wrong and your little statement about me after I was trying to defend Kevin was inaccurate. Only thing I smell is someone not being able to man up and say they were wrong. If someone who knows me wants to say I'm a cheat or a bad person that is fine. I've been called a great many things by a great many people but I will be damned to hell if I'm gonna be called a hypocrite by someone who has never even spoken to me before.

Why is it a buyers job to educate a seller on the "value" of their item? The value is dependent on how much someone wants it and how much it might cost to get it home.

I don't know how you call call anyone crazy for paying $200 for anything. Members here routinely pay large sums for things they want. Most times buyers have no idea of the mechanical condition. I suggested that Dave join here. I don't know many members, but the ones I do have been very nice and helpful. I do think your tirate above is uncalled for. You offered $75 for a combo and was rejected because other people offered more. Maybe you should have offered more? Oh yeah, that would make you out of your mind.

I've given away plenty of machines on here, just because someone was interested in them. Or sold them for what I have in them, because I didn't want to scrap a classic. But with all this infighting lately, cutthroat competition, "he said this, but you said that", 'I saw it first", yada, yada, it makes me wonder if I should just scrap 'em. Let them be recycled.

I am a little rusty on contract law, but I believe that if a verbal agreement can be proven to exist, the buyer or the seller can be held to the terms of the agreement in court. The difficulty is in proving than an un-written agreement existed. In this case, the e-mail to Kevin from the seller essentially proves this, and that the seller was backing out of it to take a higher offer. Since the sale listing doesn't say "X price or best offer", then if Kevin wanted to challenge this legally, I suspect there might be a case.

The seller is totally off-base in being annoyed that Kevin didn't advise about the machine's value. That is totally subjective and comments made above are correct. What a machine like this is worth to one person may be totally different than what it is worth to another.

I have purchased machines several times out of town/out of state, and what I usually do to secure them quickly is try to get the seller to accept Paypal. That way I can instantly pay, and the deal is put to concrete. OR, I overnight a check or the money with a receipt signature required, but that's a pain and expensive.

What the seller should have done, if he/she had any integrity, other than uphold his agreement with Kevin, would be to let Kevin know about the higher offer and give him a chance to meet it.

The person who out-paid Kevin, knowing they'd be snubbing some other interested party underhandedly, will get his/her just desert eventually. I would venture that they will have to carefully consider a gleeful "looky at what I got" post on here because then we'll all know who did the dirty deed. Sometimes a part of the fun of getting a new machine is sharing it with everyone here....

In that case YOU can offer more$. Otherwise, yes I'd be out of my mind to offer such a thing for a non commercial machine! Just so you know, you or him wouldn't be my first enemies here!

I do try to give out machines and parts here, most of the time they end up going to scrap. Due the lack of interest, and some other things, I don't think I'll be doing that anymore.
 
Sometimes I get things cheap and other times I don't. When I get bored, I attempt to get what I paid for something. I don't care how anyone else values stuff, just don't whine that it went for more. A relatively small group of collectors has determined the value of this stuff. To the vast majority, it's an old thing that's in the way.

Worse yet, don't sit and whine that something is far away. I frequently have driven to get something I wanted.
 
An update and a request.....

 

The update:

I have been in contact with the person who offered the seller higher $$$ for the set.   After a couple long e-mails and an hour on the phone, there is NO bad blood, anger or resentment between us.   We both feel that remaining friendly or being friends is A LOT MORE IMPORTANT then some old washer & dryer.   Don't get me wrong, old washers & dryers are practically what we live for, but ultimately they are not the most important thing there is.

 

Also, the seller contacted the "would be" buyer to tell him he's accepted his offer, however he (the seller) now jacked the price up even higher (and he said he DIDN'T want to start a bidding war, HA!).  So now the seller has gotten SO GREEDY, he may have priced himself out of a sale. (are you reading this Barry?)  

 

Request to the seller: PLEASE don't let your greed get the best of you, sell them to someone who will give them a loving home as you "claim" you wanted.   Also, please don't get frustrated if you don't get "your price" and then follow your wife's suggestion, PLEASE DO NOT take them to the dump! 

 

Also thank you everyone for your support!   It was an unfortunate turn of events, but hey, life goes on, with or without a turquoise Maytag washer & dryer.

 

Now my request:

Boys... PLEASE don't let this tension and anger between you fester.   Calm down and work it out somehow.  If you still feel the need to mince words, PLEASE take it to a private message or e-mail, there is no need to continue airing your "dirty laundry" here in this thread!  Thank you!

Thanks for that post, Kevin. I've been talking to you via email and phone about this mess and am happy with how you've handled, and chose to settle, the whole thing. It's bound to happen every so often where more than one of us wants to latch onto the same poor, unsuspecting appliance. The Law of Averages will catch up with us as there are lots of us and not so many nice sets popping up on the radar... BTW, You know that if any show up in the N. Nevada area, I've got your back!

NOW, on to more pressing matters that require our full attention... Who's with me in wanting to really hear Laundress sing 'Kumbaya'? (Ducks and runs...)
