Yesterday I went to an estate sale by my house and found an old Hoover D.A.M. model 1100 serial 0069746 in very nice condition for 10.00. I was initially going to pass, as I have a dial a matic already, but this one had some attachments, the hose, a spare belt, instruction manual and bag. What made me purchase it for sure was the manual had a print date of 5-63 and the vacuum on the bottom had a Jun 9, 1967 date! Seems that all I have been able to find lately is mid seventies models so this one (to me anyway) is a cool find!
My question on these is when I find them at sales, if the unit isn't stamped with the date, do you tell the date by the serial number? If so, how?

the 67 date is prolly a marking from when the machine was serviced, brushroll lube, for instance. that is a sought after machine. the 1100 is the first dial-a-matic model.

The first

the 1100 is a 1963 machine, as David said the firse DAM model.
You have a LOW serial number(the first would have been 0001001) so your machine would have HOOVER on the plug and the handle grip, as well as a red switch.
Very cool find!!

What a wonderful find and with all the pieces and in such nice shape too! I am quite sure that date is a maintenance date as Brett said. Some of my Hoovers have similar dates stamped on the bottom.

I like estate sales, but not near enough to go back to the midwest. I can always do it on visits, and if there's anything I want bad enough I can mail it back to myself. This upcoming visit will be on a holiday weekend though and there usually aren't too many then.

Hold on to that Hoover!!! It's the first DAM by Hoover! And to have the attachments and the manual, WOW! This particular DAM has no bag change indicator or carpet height adjustment. Those came later. This is also the model with the backwards brushroll. The brush strips and beater bars turn toward the belt side instead of the suction side. Hoover Guru's, that is correct ,no?

Thanks Hoover1060! Everything you said is so, the red switch and Hoover name on the handle and plug. Wow, 1963! that's so cool to know, I seem to be getting the bug for these machines!
We had one when I was little, around 1968-1969 I think. It looked similar but was brown and had the check bag indicator. I spent a lot of time using it and changing bags/belts, my room was cleaner than my sisters! And I started this when I was 6! (Ok,I have ocd!)
I used to love it when mom would take me to the Hoover dealer in Mt. Clemens to get replacement parts, it was so neat in there! Sadly, the shop finally went out of business in the early 80's.
