Hotpoint Supermatic Plus 9404

Hi everyone,

I got hold of this at the weekend, pretty battered and bruised, the fascia is worn off and theres a rusty bolt at the bottom of the spin can, but it washes and spins ok. The first wash I did was a boil and it heated fine, I then tried to heat the water for the next load, it heated for a bit then tripped the electrics, and tripped them again instantly when I tried to set it to heat again, not sure what's up there.

It may not be much but it's my first real "vintage" machine and it's just so much fun!

I'm using it with an old towel at the bottom to prevent rust tranfserring onto clothes, seems to have worked ok so far

Fascia

As you can see nearly worn off completely, but I've worked out where everything is.

It's so much fun, and great on my brother's muddy sports kit and Dog blankets.

It has taken up residence in my Grandad's cupboard for now, I'm sure I'll be getting it out everytime I'm there.

Hi Matt

Congrats on your new 9404.
You can't beat spiralator action and the fantastic filter tray.

Just wanted to give a quick bit of advice. As by the time the 9404's were made, the quality was pretty rubbish of the twin tubs with regards to the enamelling of the wash tub and spin can.

When you have finished washing and have emptied the wash tub make sure you thoroughly dry round the top (where the seal is) and on the bottom around and under the heater and around the drain filter. The bottom and top of the wash tubs on late models rust very very quickly. The metal / enamel is very thin and small holes quickly appear where rust takes hold. I have found many a 9404/9414 where the top and bottom of the wash tub is rusted badly and one we picked up from the street had a whole in the bottom of the wash tub.

Dont mean to sound a kill joy but want your machine to last you.

Yeah it really is great fun to use.

I see what you mean about the quality, I've noticed the cabinet resonates loudly when the spinner is getting up to speed and the fascia is pretty cracked as well.

I've left the lids off since I used it on Saturday, but next time I shall remember to wipe it round and dry it thoroughly.

Cetainly looks like a lot of fun to use, Matt! I love the idea of being totally in command over the wash programme, albeit with just the one wash action (suppose you could easily hand wash anything very fragile in the tub, still reusing the water).

So you seem to be a man with critical faculties well engaged: what's your honest verdict on the rinsing ability? Is spin rinsing really any good or does one have to resort to a deep rinse in the the wash tub? Must admit, this aspect has me concerned when considering twinnie use and I don't fancy mucking about with a tub of stone cold water in the middle of winter!

Anyway, lucky chap to have the machine...wish I had a cupboard to stash one in!

Hi Matt congratulations on you twinnie, the Hotpoints have a great spin on them and the fliter flo is great as well, I love that on my Hotpoin TL. I have a supermatic de luxe 14890 and mine has rust at the top and bottom like Mark said. Hope you have lot's of fun with it.

first of all thanks for the compliments, I'm chuffed it bits with it, even if it is a little rough around the edges.

Alex: I'm probably overly fanatical when it comes to rinsing, and this was a concearn I had when I got the machine. I've been doing 2 or 3 rinses in the spin can then a final deep rinse in the tub, I'm sure equally good results are achievable in the spin can, but this just gives me that little extra peace of mind (LOL as if anything really bad would happen if there was any residue left but I'm obsessive like that!) that things are completely rinsed and I feel it disperses the softner through the fibres better. I'd imagine for the average housewife back in the day who wasn't too fussed a couple of spin rinses would have done just fine though.

Yeah I'm really lucky to have the space (and an understanding Grandfather), I've wanted a twinnie for so long now!

Rich: yours is an absolute stunner! More like what I had in mind when I thought of getting once myself, but beggars can't be choosers eh?

Funny how much mileage Hotpoint has put on that word. In the 1950s, the Supermatic Unit on their ranges was the one that was thermostatically controlled, like GE's SensiTemp.

Congratulations Matt, The Supermatics were really good machines - the filter-flo makes a huge difference, and the sloshing is pretty soothing too!

I had one of these as an everyday machine, and have to say that it rinsed very well, noticably better than my current Hoovermatic. I believe the spinner has some sort of clutch, so you can literally run water through until the outer spin can is full to the brim, without straining the machine. Probably used a lot of water in the process, but hey ho!

Hoovermatic spinarinse

My mum had a Hoovermatic De Luxe. She never used the spinarinse function, as she found it didn't rinse the clothes properly - especially my nappies at the time! Apparently as a baby, I ended up with a serious eczema skin condition that required medical treatment.

She always rinsed the laundry in the sink and spun them in the spinner tub as the next load was washing. As you can see, the Hoover 'Electronic 1100' was a total revelation when she got that in 1980!

Hotpoint Twintub

I recently bought a Hotpoint Twintub, model number 9404. I had one years ago and I thought it was wonderful. My grandmother had bought it new in 1976, used it only once and didn't like it because it steamed up all the windows. She pushed it under the kitchen worktop and there it remained until she died in 1994

When we were clearing her house I had a lot of her nice furniture. I also got the twin tub as I had no washing machine of my own. I wasn't sure about it at first, being accustomed to automatics, and hand wash with a mini spin drier. Some rubber components had perished ad had to be replaced. Once I got used to the ''twinnie'' I loved it. I had to scrap it when the case went rusty.

Compared to an automatic it's so flexible and economical, re-using the same soapy water, which you can then use to mop the floor. My winter woolies that are hand wash only can be washed in there and the clothes come out much cleaner. Of course you have to be with it to use it, you can't just leave while you are at work or in bed. The only real downside is that it's a bit harsh on the clothes. Any rips, loose buttons or even an unfastened zip fly can be made worse.

I wondered if anyone can nominate a supplier of parts for these machines, and an engineer who would repair or service them.
