I was looking thru some dishwasher info and came across the cycle breakdown. The one I was looking at claimed 2 washes, 4 rinses. BUT, it hit me that if I use the little gel packs I really am only getting 1 wash. Will this trend change the design of soap dispensers and invalidate the manufacters claims of x washes/rinses?

I actually very rarely put detergent in the prewash section of the dispenser in my kenmore elite tall tub. I find one detergent wash does more than satisfacotrily 99% of the time.

It's rare that I *don't* use both dispenser cups. Depending on the cycle selected, the sequence is W-R-R-W-R-R-R, W-R-W-R-R, W-W-R-R (which would be R-W-R-R with only the main cup filled).

Using only one cup on the Fast cycle gives W-R-R.

Gone are the good old days of

W-R-R-W-R-R-D in a normal cycle of an older D&M.

Purge- R-W-R-W-R-R-D in an older Whirlpool (two covered cups)

W-R-R-W-R-R-R-D in an older Kitchen Aid.

Please correct me if my memory is failing.

Yes a phase without detergent is effectively a rinse.

I'm most fond of W-W-R-R-D to this day! Psychologically i like two final rinses. Although adding a chemical (rinse agent) to the final rinse water is still kinda gross, but often necessary.

I use Aldi's Reeva brand and do a lot of rinse & holds (with detergent). Being that the dishes are prewashed several times, I use the 'quick wash' on my Kenmore Elite (about 10 years old). The cycle consists of a single wash, drain, purge, rinse. 26 minutes plus temp. delay in the rinse.

If I use the water miser or normal wash, (R,W,P,R,D) I generally put detergent in both cups.

I don't get...

....all the fuss.

I've never used or owned a dishwasher here or in Europe that had a cycle with 2 distinct, detergent required, wash cycles.

If the programmes on the machine are set up correctly, it shouldn't be needed in the first instance....

....and what an imposition on the consumer when it comes to product usage....sheesh!

All dishwashers with one or more covered detergent cups release the contents of said cups at specific points in the cycle, which technically indicates those periods are intended to be washes.  Of course, detergent doesn't *have* to be used for *any* particular phase of the cycle.  Or, one can simply toss a dose of detergent onto the door liner and fire the machine up, thus making the first fill a wash and all the rest rinses.
