You may be in the eye of the storm. Be prepared the winds could pick back up to hurricane force from 180 degrees of the original direction with only a moment's notice!

What a nice and thoughtful thread!

Hanging in here in Northern New Jersey. The wind is terrible right now, still have power although it is flikering. The worst should be in the next hour or so and last through the night, oh Joy. A big branch just came down and pulled the power lines off the house, they are just flapping in the breeze but hopefully they will hang on, could be a big problem if they let go.

Anyone here from Martin (Yogitunes) he's in Southern Jersey and they are getting hammered right now.

4 blips in the power so far- just enough to pop the lights etc off for 1/2 a second. I tried getting some video of the howling winds through the trees, but it just doesn't capture it. Kind of wimpy looking if I were to view it as an outsider.

However, it's anything but, and we're not even getting the worst of it like some others are. When I was going to shoot some vid out the front door, I noticed a cruiser had parked maybe 75 feet from our driveway in front of a fallen tall pine on the edge of the MDC (Mass District Commission) land- it marks the underground public water supply that travels through Southborough into Boston. I thought it was one of the cops I knew, so Rich and I donned shoes and coats and popped out to see if we could help. We were at the end of our drive when we heard a kind of popping sound and another pine a little further in (away from us) came over right next to the first one. It just uprooted and fell. Luckily there was still the better part of a lane to travel, so we all just stayed clear and waited for the road crew to arrive.

The extension cords are in place, just waiting in case we have to fire up the generator. We've talked about getting a new one that holds more gas and is quieter, but haven't gotten there yet. We went 2+ days with this one that runs about 1 1/4 hours on a fill and it's been dependable for 15 years, but quieter and longer-running would be nice! We're looking at the Duro Max 4400, with or without electric start. One of Rich's patients has this model and it's very nice!

Good luck to all,
Chuck

Sorry guys.....I was posting in the Dirty Laundry thread of the Storm......

we have been having rain all day.....high winds....lost power once.....good to know the generator works.....

not my fault this time....I did not do my usual rain dance on the front porch NaKeD.....but if I did, imagine the power I would have!......

although I was outside with my yellow coveralls and jacket.....NaKeD underneath.....MAN, that rubber is COLD!....good thing it wasn't clear.....

stores were sold out here and closed early......but the Liquor stores are still open.....if you can't do one activity, might as well get drunk...or both...until the storm rides out.....

I was saying this would have been a great day to have a Wash-In....what else are we gonna do on a day like this, but sit around and be bored.....I have back up power, plenty of food and drinks......roll out some sleeping bags....and we got a slumber party.....it would be the first ever.....not exactly the BEAR wash-in I would hope for....but we could go outside and wrestle in the mud!....

Jim....you game for a mud bath?

Updates from Rhode Island

My power has flickered once or twice, but still up and running. Judging by the new reports, it's 6:15 p.m. and areas of Providence near the water are starting to flood. So, the fun begins. Not much rain, but a lot of wind. Sitting here trying to get some work done to keep my mind off things, but will be glad when this is over.

PS: If it gets really bad, you may see my picture on the news sailing down the street in my Thor Automagic!!

I thought you had renamed that thing the SS Valdez for the oil it was leaking. Of course, oil does float on water!

Winds are picking up a bit- according to the radar map it looks like the worst of it will hit us around 8PM. Still got power!

Floating Buddy.........

You know Jim......Jersey could break off and drift off into the ocean.....

Make sure you get a Floating Buddy...have to have someone to feed to the sharks while you swim to safety....

I was listening to "Talk of the Nation" on NPR this morning around 11:15 Pacific and a listener called in from Long Island, advising that conditions were already worse than anything he experienced with Irene even though Sandy was still several hours away from making landfall.

Like Allen said, let's hope this whole thing moves through quickly.

Really worried about my AW and F and H friends caught in the storm. First two that come to my mind is Laundress and Steve (Toggleswitch). Will be checking often.

The wind is so bad, car alarms are being set off. The trees are really getting a beating, but nothing down so far. Lights are flickering. It's funny, with the windows closed you can barely hear it. The wind is mostly hitting the other side of my building, although every now and then it switches direction. Amazingly, I see Chinese take-out guys on those electric scooters making deliveries. and a few idiots fighting to stay a foot on the streets. here's still traffic on Broadway, albeit very light. Most of the bridges and tunnels are closed.

I've never seen/heard wind like this in my life.

This is it...

The building is beginning to sway, I'm up on the 19th floor. Things are being blown off buildings by me, hearing a lot of crashing sounds....
