Spent most of the day housecleaning and what not, also getting ready for the Miele serviceman's visit tomorrow which as of today have not heard anything about being cancelled.
Unlike yesterday night the streets on the UES of Manhattan are mainly deserted. Now and then you see occasional cars or taxis drive by but otherwise streets and avenues are empty. Some shops and stores were open eariler today but by five or six PM most if not all had closed down. The only way into Manhattan is via the tunnels as all the bridges have been closed, ditto for the VZ and other bridges onto/off Staten Island and what not.
Not allot of rain but now and then strong winds. Streets and sidewalks are littered with branches, leaves and all sorts of debris blown down. We have power as expected but ConEdison has shut power to parts of lower Manhattan (near Battery Park City) out of concerns for the system there.
Other than that am off to do some ironing and perhaps some baking.

Until a few hours ago I was still hoping that the dire predictions wouldn't come to pass. Lets just hope that there is no loss of life. Many people caught up in this storm stand to lose everything they possess. This event will destroy livelihoods and lives. It's ultimate human cost will be so much higher than the temporary inconvenience to the ecnoomy.
In events like these it is always the poorest and most vulnerable who are worst effected. Think about all those folk in Haiti and what they must have felt during the storm; watching their ram-shackle homes and possessions disintegrate around them.
I have family in Long Island. Luckily they are not near the coast and I know they will be inconvenienced, but relatively safe.
To all of you caught up in this I sincerely wish that you are safe and well. At least you are in a place where help is available and the authorities will do everything they can to mitigate this crisis.

just got word from the news the Storm has centered over Atlantic City.....
Amazing how much rain can come down in one day, and the wind continuously blow.....everything is flowing sideways.....

So far! High winds but not all that much rain. Power blinks on and off from time to time. Have to go around and re-set microwave, alarm clock, etc. I have gas stove and oven, so can still cook. Took trash out earlier, and like Yogitunes said, felt like I needed a cinder block strapped to my a$$. Don't fear, we NJ hairdressers will be returning everyone to beauty within hours after the storm.

Just heard that the Battery Park tunnel is flooding. There was a crane on top of a 60 story tall building under construction that broke loose from it's mounting and is dangling from the roof. Police have closed the streets around the building.
I remember my first hurricane. I was living in an apt building and the building was shuddering all night long. I had never been so scared in my life. The air conditioning compressors were bouncing up and down in the wind on the roof.
When I woke up in the morning, my muscles were so sore from being on edge and tense for so long!
It sounds like our group is doing pretty good considering what's in progress. And that makes us happy!
Looks like Harrisburg is seeing the worst of it right now. Except for one more pass of moderate rain I think New Jersey will be done with the rain. But the wind & storm surge will remain.

Are at the new uber-luxury building One57 (not far from one's home), a place that even before construction has been completed billionaires have snapped up most if not all the units including in "bidding wars".
As for Battery Tunnel flooding, well it would wouldn't it?
Don't think many including those living in Manhattan realise how much of the land below about 34th Street is either low lying and or built upon landfill. The FDR drive routinely floods during bad storms as does West Street/Westside highway. Battery Park City/World Financial Center complex is totally built upon landfill as is much of everything west of West Street around lower Manhattan.
Am not that old but remember when the World Trade Center actually was the "end" of land for that area. Behind it was West Street then the docks/piers.
If one examines old maps of Manhattan overlaid with the modern street grid system you'll see a huge difference in the landscape around the lower Manhattan area. Creeks, ponds and so forth were filled in, indeed Canal Street is called just that because there once was a canal there. It is still located under the streets/subway and once during construction an old boat/ship was unearthed.

Really windy but have power in Southern MD
Power went out at 11 am, but amazingly came back around 5 pm. Saw on the news a big tree had fallen across the road up by Chesapeake Beach taking out everyone below, but the crews worked thru the wind and rain to get it restored, amazing job. Howling out there now, power flickers but has stayed on. This is the first time we have ever had power after the beginning of a storm, ususally we are out for a week. Keeping fingers crossed it keeps moving fast and no one gets hurt. DC and everything else is closed tomorrow as it is supposed to be bad until the morning.

Rain has tapered to a light drizzle......but winds are still howling, I swear the house is swaying side to side.....
many shore areas are under a lot of water and high winds.....
many roads, Turnpike, and Parkway/Expressway areas are closed due to the flooding....just unreal....
even the dog ran out and back in ASAP, and was soaked in seconds.....for anyone who has pets, keep an eye on them, and keep them safe and dry, even if you have to put them in the basement for safety...
keep us updated for your areas as you can......stay safe

I can imagine what the wind must be like in the northeast. It's been howling here today from this storm and we're far west of it. I can't believe some of the reports and pics I've seen of NYC. Crazy!

The runways at both JFK & LGA are now flooded and these airports are closed. Areas south of 40th st are now without power but Brooklyn is still lit up.

School cancelled again tomorrow (Tuesday) here. Southboro and Northboro have a shared high school and some of Northboro is w/o power.

So far, so good here in this part of Maine. Supposed to turn real nasty tonight and later on for the next few days and Gov. has declared a State of Emergency. Power is still on so far but spikes every so often with the wind. We are expected to get tons of rain coming right thru Friday, as that low pressure system is supposed to park itself somewhere over the state so the worst is not even started supposidly for us. We are under a High Wind Warning and Flood Warning where I am. I'll let you know later how things are going. Hope you who people are doing alright south of me with all the flooding. If there is ever a powerful enough hurricane like the one in 1938 that takes out the barrier islands from Queens though Long Island (Fire Island, certain Hamptons etc...) JFK is in big trouble. Those island help keep Jamacia Bay from becoming a huge flooding problem, if they go and or badly breeched water levels in the Bay will rise permanently. Well at least until someway is found (if possible) to rebuild.
Much as New Yorkers complain about sending so much money to Washington D.C., the federal government pumps an incredible amount of funds into beach projects for some of the most expensive beach front property in the United States; the "gold coast" of New Jersey through the Hamptons of Long Island.

To all in the storms path and fury - my thoughts/wishes... for your safety and minimal inconveniences go out to all of you. While at some friends house tonight, we saw the storm surge along the coast rise to 11ft, Wall Street's first floor with more than an inch of water, photos of the subway flooded, and more. Sorry to hear that the ship used for the two movies, Mutiny on the Bounty was (not confirmed)sunk, 13 escaped on lifeboats, and 2 were lost. It's hard to imagine a storm 1,000 miles wide, 175 miles of hurricane force winds(up to 90mph) and rain amounts accruing at crazy rates. Hope you all who are affected will not experience power outages -heard earlier today that more than 700,000 were w/o power. Thinking of you and hoping those on AW.org will be safe. I'm sorry I had to edit this..too much in a hurry.
