First for the good news. I don’t know if you all have noticed but over the past few years aw.org has gotten busier and busier and busier. The growth recently has been amazing and I think it’s totally great. We’ve not built just a website, but an entire social network for those of us who find washers, dryers and dishwashers fun and interesting machines.

Let’s have look at some quick statistics:

First number of threads and posts (as of last week):
Imperial-threads<span style="color: #000000;"> created: 11,370</span> /<span style="color: #000000;"> posts made: 144,052 </span>
Deluxe-threads <span style="color: #000000;">created: 5,647</span> / <span style="color: #000000;">posts made: 72,366 </span>
Super-threads<span style="color: #000000;"> created: 14,720</span> / <span style="color: #000000;">posts made: 212,912 </span>
AsTubTurn-threads<span style="color: #000000;"> created: 448</span> / <span style="color: #000000;">posts made: 6,080 </span>
DirtyL-threads created: 302 / <span style="color: #000000;">posts made: 6,427 </span>

Number of posts from our old Applianceville system from 2001-2004: 44,433 (I started the first post in thread #1 in the Discuss-o-Mat at 44,434 to reflect the posts from the old system).

Next, here is the number of fabulous Pictures and Scans members have uploaded to share over the years:
Imperial: 32,537
Deluxe: 10,605
Super: 27,525
ATT: 729
DirtyL: 6,427

Total Images since 2004: 77,823 pictures! Isn’t that just amazing!!!?

Next take a look at this chart I just made, it shows the automaticwasher.org usage over the past five years:

This chart shows the bandwidth of the site. Bandwidth is simply number of bytes that the site sends out to its users, think of it as each time you click on and read a thread it takes bandwidth. The more pictures and text in a thread, the more bandwidth it uses. We are nearing an average of 300gb per month. According to what I find on the web, the average website uses barely 1gb per month. The other thing is our disk has now grown to almost 17gb of text and pictures and almost 100,000 files!

Now for the bad news. Our web host has contacted me to let me know that we have outgrown our current server. We are on what is referred to as a shared sever. We share the sever with between 500 and 1000 other websites. Our web host provider wants us to move to a semi-dedicated VPS server which means will only share the sever with 5 to 15 other sites and each site gets its own disk space and memory allocated to their site. That means that if we get a huge spike in traffic or people download lots of manuals all at once, we will only affect our site speed and not anyone else’s. So that means I have to start shopping around for a new web host. Sure I can choose a new plan at the current host we have, but it’s good to shop around and read the reviews. Our current host’s reviews are only fair and we did have that issue last summer with someone hacking our hosts central server that rerouted 1000s of their hosted websites (and some of our traffic) to a hacker website in Sweden. That made me a bit nervous when that happened to say the least. Although otherwise I would say that the current host has been great and I still might decided to stay with them but purchase a new plan. The didn’t give me a deadline for moving, but if we continue to grow and do not move they will shut us down. I will never allow that to happen! This website is too important to me and so many of us here.

For those of you who are knowledgeable about web hosting if you have any advice or recommendations, now is the time to speak up. Moving 16gb web site is a HUGE task so I don’t want to do this often. It also means that the costs of running the site are going to at least double and possible triple. Thankfully I’ve collected enough donations that should cover most of these costs for the transition, a big thanks again you guys. I’ll keep everyone posted about the move. A move will mean some down time, but I plan on keeping it as painless and as fast as possible, at least to the best of my ability.

Ugh, just when I finished with the changes to the site and was ready to settle down and start working on my rubber-tub Bendix machines, this happens lol. Oh well, life on the internet.  Again, this site is so worth all the time and effort.

Robert, I am absolutely sure of one thing:  You will make the right decision.

Thanks for everything you do.

Ralph

Next thing you know, Internet Brands will be contacting you and offering to buy the site for a cool million dollars.

Congrats on having such a large internet presence. That's actually a pretty big honor.

Good luck with the decision making process and the move, and as always, thanks for all the hours you dedicate to keeping this alive and well....and thriving.

Robert as you said, this is good and bad news.  It is amazing how the site has grown over the past few years.  When I think back to 2001 when you had our convention at your home I can't believe the changes.  You have created a "home" for us and for that we can never thank you enough.  I am sure that many of us here are more than willing to help in anyway we can.  Just let us know.

Hey

All I can say is WOW. I would gladly pay double what I contributed each year to this website.  I've been a member for almost 6 years and I love this site!!!  It is worth the joy and comarodery that comes with being a member of this site. I wish I had the expertese to help. But I trust you will do the right thing for all the group.

I'd pay double - if we get a knowledge base/wiki....just too much good info to not have in an accessible format for members (with all due respect to the Search-a-lator thangy) :D

Oh, I agree, if needed I would pay double, a very small price to pay for the knowledge and fun we have......Let us know if we can help along the way...

again, Thanks for all you do Robert

Martin

Hey Guys, awww thank you.  I do appreciate the nice comments.  I'm almost positive that no additional fees will be necessary, I just have to do some shopping around.  I'm more concerned with keeping that site down time to a minimum.

Same here Robert, if I need to chip in some more, just let me know.  I wish I knew more about the subject and could contribute some knowledge as well, I am so lost on servers, routers and computers in general.

Me, too! This site and all the members have become my decompression chamber. Worth whatever it takes. And it's been said over and over, but bears repeating, a million thanks, Robert. You da man!

On our way to a yottabyte a month!

Wow - what a lot of work to move all this over to a new server.  Your hands will be dry and chapped by the end of all that!  I'm sure you'll make the right decision on a new website home, you always do.

Let us know if you need anything - money, cars, jewels, a cuppa, whatever!

Thanks for everything.  G

Thanks again, Robert

This site is truly priceless. I've gotten countless hours of enjoyment from it, and learned a lot, too. You've made many improvements to an already great website, and I'm sure whatever service you pick will only make things even better.

And from the UK too

Thanks for all your hard work Robert for what is now a global phenomenon - it is just wonderful to read through all the threads & images being both informed and entertained and no ads and no pop-ups to divert and annoy. Like others, I too would be more than glad to make a supplementary donation if necessary, its a small price to pay for such a wonderful resource

Al

This site had been priceless

Robert

If you need more donations please say so ... Your a wonderful Human being for dealing with all this net hosting stuff ... You know how you are blessed and all the people that interact on this site are blessed to have each other as support when needed. You have truly made a mitzvah

Philippe

I, too, agree that I'd help out however I could. I KNOW, I'll rent the U-Haul although I wonder if it'd more resemble the truck in the opening scene from the Beverly Hillbillies... LOL!

(Ducking and trying to avoid Robert's 'ZOT' key...)

Thank you Robert for all the hard work.  As the 1950s or early 1960s song says--"Ya better shop around".  I know you'll enjoy doig that.  Let us know if we need to contribute more financially too.

Wow I didn't realize how popular we are! LOL and the bad news wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Just sounds like more of an inconvience for you Robert

and I'm with everyone else on here, if an extra donation is needed now, please say the word. You know we'll do anything and everything we can to make this easier and less costly for you. Thanks for the heads up Robert, and thank you for this network. Remind me to buy you a drink or 2 if ever we get to meet

You guys are all so nice.  Really any extra contributions wont be necessary, the upgraded subscritpions should cover it.

I'm more concerned about just giving everyone advanced notice of what is going on.  I think the fact that the site is so busy and popular should tell us all that the fact we love these machines really isn't so different or odd after all.
smiley-cool.gif
Well ok maybe a little, but we sure aren't alone.  But "busy" on the internet also means some new responsibilities for running the site.

If I have to move the site, some users might not have access for a few days.  Some dsl and cable companies can take a few days before they update their dns addresses and during that time users wont be able to post or see updated threads.  On the other hand, others providers do their updates in the matter of hours, so its all a luck of the draw of who your internet provider is.  Its called DNS Propagation.  I just want get everyone used to the idea of moving early on and what might be involved.

When I worked for AT&T, one of my management functions involved end user station dns address discrepancies and related dns  updates.  They'd run them every night.

Here at home we have  ADSL service through AT&T.  I hope they're at least as quick to make updates for their subscribers as they are for their in-house clients.

Robert, I think I can speak for the membership and advise that it's understood that parts of the migration process are going to be out of your hands.   Thanks for advising on what to expect.

Maybe I jinxed you

I just joined about 2 months ago, so maybe I jinxed you when I joined. LOL I don't ever want to see the site shut down, I love it here! I've learned so much already, and everybody's so friendly.

Andy

Despite the specter of severe AW withdrawal symptoms during any move-related downtime, I think it's likely everyone will support whatever decision you make, Robert.

While I managed multiple corporate file servers for 15 years, and almost always found a way to upgrade them, move them to new hardware, etc, with a minimum of downtime, I realize it's a daunting task and I can't imagine the vastly increased complexity of moving an internet server, with many thousands of remote connections as well as integration onto the Web to worry about. I think you're a step ahead of the game since you wrote all this software so you know that end probably like the back of your hand, versus having to try to second guess the design intent of the developer of a commercial message board package.

Good luck whatever decision you make, Robert!
