I have a small GE deep fryer, the type that is rectangular in shape and the element sits down in the tank. It's pretty clean but there is brown stains on the basket and the element.

I'm thinking I'll fill it with water and put in some dish soap or detergent, turn it on the lowest setting, and boil it for a while with the basket down. Then I'll put the lid on and let it sit overnight so it can soak.

Do you that will get the grease off?

I used to be a cook and used to clean out a big gas deep fryer.

Filling it up with water and boiling it with a strong detergent works pretty well, but you still have to scrub and scrape to get it really clean. I used dishwasher detergent powder in the water. Bring it to the boil, switch off and leave it for a while. I used to leave it an hour, but for a domestic fryer you probably won't ned to leave it so long, depending on how long it was since the last thorough clean.
Then drain and scrub out using a stainless steel scourer and a paste cleanser. Then rinse thoroughly.

3M make a griddle cleaning liquid that is just amazing at cleaning off baked on fatty gunk from griddles. It is food grade non-toxic, and the results are unbelievable. You use it undiluted, it is an orange-coloured runny gel and you use it on a hot surface. I have never tried it on a fryer but it would be worth a shot if you can source some. Griddles are traditionally cleaned with caustic soda here, which is nasty dangerous stuff. The 3M product was a revelation, I wouldn't use anything else once I found it.

Boil out fryer cleaner

I have no idea of the name or who makes it but you can get a fryer cleaner that you add to water bring it to the boil and leave it for a while.
Put the basket in the dishwasher and keep washing it until its clean may take a few cycles as for the element that should be cleaned from the detergent in the fryer.
If you can not find any specific detergent then a heavy dose of washing soda will do a pretty good job.

Thanks for the advice

I actually followed all of your suggestions, kind of.

I just brought the water to a boil and then dumped in the Cascade with Dawn dishwasher detergent we use. It worked pretty well.

Only thing is it can be hard to tell if the pot itself is clean as it's a black enamel like finish. I may run it through the dishwasher just to make sure.

That boiling Cascade detergent surely smelled nice too. lol
