Ideas for TL guy looking to get into used FL under $500

I've been searching and researching as much as I can find on this very helpful forum. I've grown up with 90's Maytag TL's all my life, and purchased a '93 TL with matching dryer and they have been rock solid the past 2 years, but I'm thinking of adding a FL to my collection. My wife does light bed sheets from her business about 5 loads a week and our normal non-heavily soiled laundry weekly. I've been searching for a year for any kind of speed queen but always missed one. Besides craigslist and eBay, is there any other places to search for used washers? I am looking for something made in the last 20 years, I like the capacity of the newer LG's but am worried how long it will last which is why I'm thinking of driving a few hours to get a smaller SQ front loader. I know it doesn't have the onboard heat as the LG.

Thank you for the links, I WANT that stacked SQ badly, but NYC is 6.5 hours one way from me, as I'm in Rochester.

I haven't read great things about FRIGIDAIRE, plus isn't the stacker have a smaller capacity? I think the smallest I want to go is 3.2 cu ft.

I wish that SQ was closer. I'm actually thinking I may contact Eugene and see what he has as cleveland is only 4 hours from me and I'd like to give back for all the reviews he does.

even if you had that SQ shipped, would still be cheaper than a brand new one....and highly unlikely you would ever have to buy another washer/dryer again in your life....

by reviews, Neptunes got a bad rap as well....

then again, I had ten kids, and can easily wash king size quilts....plus I know how to care for a machine...

could be why I have a fleet of them.....only one set was bought brand new, the rest were used...

keep in mind, with a lot of these newer machines...the higher the Tier for energy savings, the lower the temps will be dubbed down, and less water used per fill.....add on upwards of 90+ minutes to wash one load....

You know I've seen your postings and read a few things about the Neptunes and am pretty handy at fixing things. I found this one cheap, I was thinking of picking it up if it's the later versions, mah5000+ is the model to look for right?

5500 were the most popular...800 rpm spin

6500 offer an internal heater...

7500 has a touch screen and 'stain brain'...

these last two offer either 1000 or 1200 rpm spin...

if anything, plug that unit in before purchase and set to 'spin'....it should be smooth and almost silent.....if it roars, your looking at bearings and seals, about 20.00 or so in parts....and rather a moderately easy job, done in about 2 hours...

but if it does roar, then you can negotiate a lower price....technically all a repair man would do is order a whole rear outter tub replacement with bearing/seals already installed....pricing around 700.00...

Scratch and Dent

Maybe take an afternoon and tour your local big box stores for scratch and dent finds.

You can often do some bargaining and if you're lucky you can ask for them to not mention that it was a scratch and dent on your receipt.

Then call the manufacturer, tell them you don't want to bother to replace the machine due to the "delivery damage" and to just keep the damage listed in conjunction with the serial number.

Bamm brand new machine with full warranty for half the price or less.

No, don't think one can do that

First one must inform appliance maker of serial number and where machine was bought, this and or provide proof of purchase (receipt). Either way there is likely to be some indication of why the appliance was sold for less than MSRP. If it was on sale or whatever reduction this normally is indicated.

Nearly all or most "big box" stores here in USA have clearance/scratch and dent or whatever departments or entire stores where merchandise is on offer.

Besides most scratch and dent appliances that are "new" will carry full manufacturers warranty regardless. No need for going about the bush. In some cases the store in question will offer something in addition to, above or in place of manufacturers warranty. https://lowes.bstock.com/conditions/

Removal Of Serial Numbers On US Major Appliances

NO US Appliance maker will knowingly allow any of their appliances to be sold or even used without the model-serial tag attached to the appliance, and there is differently no warranty of any kind on any appliances found without this tag.

Never said something about removing the serial number

It dosen't matter how cheap you bought a machine, you still have warranty on it as long as it was shipped as new.

If your invoice dosen't say it was a returned machine or a scratch and dent machine, it's just a normal machine for the manufacturer, even if you got it for free.
Warranty laws still apply to products you got cheap or even free.

And personal should be more then abled to just create a normal transaction with what ever discount you get without mentioning preexisting damage.

We had a washer delivered with slight cosmetic damage and actualy got some money back on it after it was delivered.

However we still had to call the manufacturer, given them the serial number, a copy of order paperwork and our data.
They created an "account" for the machine in their database, listed the cosmetic damage with pictures and send us a confirmation of our warranty status (warranty still valid) which we were told to keep with the warranty paperwork.

Otherwise when ever we would have had a warranty service call on the machine our warranty status could have been questioned as there was obvious damage to the machine beyond normal use without a known confirmed cause.

Really don't know where you got the idea of removing a serial number from...

I found what I believe is a Amana neptune clone, can anyone confirm? Does it have the built in heat because of the 6800 in the model #?

This is a clone of the Neptune 6500 with the heater.  The buttons are just laid out differently and renamed.  Attached is a closeup of the 6500 panel.

wow...that's an odd bird....never seen that control panel matched to the FL version.....usually you seen that with the TL version....

but yeah, I guess that would still be a good one....

I think its a bit steep on price though....

but just the same....plug it in, and set to spin....

Awesome, thank you guys, this forum is the best. I agree Yogi, the price is high, but I'm planning on talking him down. I just missed a neptune for $75 locally.

So just press spin only button and the start button and it should spin quietly?

yes....just press spin and start....

it will take a few minutes, you will hear the door lock click, then the pump will come on....and in a minute or two you will start to hear it ramp up....

but it should be smooth and steady....
