Yes, do your own laundry. When we moved house back in 2000, I got my own bathroom and, consequently, I bought a laundry basket for my clothes.
My mother washes everything in warm water (104°F), does not use Extra Rinse, which I ALWAYS do and does not really care for the dosage instructions on the back of the deterget box. So... I do my own laundry. Two loads a week - a warm one for colors and a hot one for whites. Doesn't take a whole lot of time; folding takes the longest.
My girlfriend's mother is even worse about doing laundry. She basically only sorts by color. For example: a pink towel, pink socks and pink lingerie would be washed in one cool load - because the lingerie (so she thinks) can't take hot water. *yikes*
Bottom line: a few weeks ago, my GF got her own laundry basket, too. Now, I am washing her laundry and all of the family's towels the way things are supposed to be washed. Period. I also run the washer through regular cleaning cycles when her parents ain't at home.
Finally, here's a picture of a Maytag Neptune front loader that was used for cold-water-washing only. That brown stuff is not rust - it's mold. The person who took those pictures said they switched to warm/hot water after that and they never had this problem again.
