Is this a 2 speed Kenmore?

Yes.  Perhaps a Kenmore expert will chime in ... but I think a direct-drive 40/400 series and below would be 1-speed (with intermittent agitation for Delicate).  50/500 probably 1-speed depending on the feature set.  60/600 probably 2-speed depending on the feature set.  Sears tends to go wildcard with their offerings so always best to confirm the individual machine.

Glenn is exactly correct

With Kenmore you never know sometimes, but my hunch is this second pictured machine is a two speed because of the presence of both a Heavy Duty cycle and a Normal cycle. The HD would run at full speed in agitate and spin, whereas the Normal would agitate in low speed.

Thanks for all the input. They certainly knew how to play feature ball. Although the sales people always knew which ones were 2 speed and which ones were 1 speed. It seems customers made a lot of complaints regarding the 2 speeders.

Customer complaints on single speed machines

I hadn't heard that there were customer complaints on the 1-speed models, but it makes sense.

I could do without a delicate speed on a belt-drive washer, but I used the slow speed wash feature on my DD more than I used the regular. Having fast agitation only would make me adjust my washing habits, as lower water levels seem more like putting clothes in a blender than a washer at times.
