I think it's time I see a professional about this - I can't stand to see old electric stoves thrown on the scrap heap.

It's a Kelvinator ER-353...probably a BOL but made right here in Detroit. I'm guessing 1954 or thereabouts.

Holy cow you rescued a queen it seems! It looks absolutely fantastic! Congratulations!

Now, you are not the only one who needs to see a professional. Line up behind the rest of us. Lol!

That's a heck of a save! Looks to be complete and really clean. Someone really took great care and appreciated it at one time.

One thing I really like about this one....

is that the convenience outlet is placed conveniently!

Instead of being worried about melting the mixer's cord while beating a frosting (for example), with the outlet on the backsplash, there it is on the front.

Kelvinator is supposedly the originator of the 30" range and by the end of the 50s, it was the most popular size electric range according to Consumer Reports. That wide oven was such a revolutionary and welcome feature. If this range has a concealed bake element, it is probably older than 1954. That is more of a very early 50s fiasco.

Thanks for all the comments - this stove is interesting in that it has the control knobs on the front over the door instead of on the dash. Now I've seen this very often on gas stoves, which makes sense - you don't want to singe your arm reaching over the burners to turn on/off/adjust. But it doesn't seem a common feautre on electric stoves.

This is the second stove I've rescued in the past three months. I know I'm "preaching to the choir" here, but I sure would like to find a way to use and enjoy all these stoves. I can't get them all in the house, so would it be crazy to change my kitchen stove every year?? Luckilly, they are all 30" models. Otherwise, they sit in a storage locker or my garage collecting dust.

I think these old girls are aching to put back in service - isn't that why they were built? It's either that, or I'll ask Santa for some electro-shock that might cure me of my need to drag home every enamel coated thing I find!!

Frigidaire electrics had the surface unit switches on the front through 1954. Other electric range manufacturers moved them from the front earlier except Monarch. WH, GE & HP apartment size ranges kept the controls on the front even into the 60s, even after Frigidaire's apartment range had them moved to the backsplash.

My old, i would say late 40's stove, has the dials on fr

I love'm too :)

The dash dials are the timer and oven/griddle. The burners are up front like your Kelvy

According to the model number, yours is a 1953 which was the first year for Kelvinator's 30" range, but Frigidaire introduced their first 30" model in 1950 so I was wrong about Kelvinator. Well, even if they were not first with the 30" range, they made damn fine stoves before WCI. They did introduce foil-lined ovens for easy cleaning, but we will try to overlook that.

Graham - that Estate stove is awesome! What was the name of the company that made that stove?

Tom - thanks for dating my stove. I thought this was an early 30 inch model, good to know it's a '53!

Ooh! A perfect replacement for the 2006 Kenmore rebadged Frigidaire piece-of-junk electric stove in my kitchen now. Kevin, if you're ever willing to part with any of your 30-inch stoves, please let me know. Thanks!

Rob

'fess up, Sharples! Where is that treasure trove you're checking out? I think I see a LadyK AND a Westy slant front peeking around the corners.

GE Airliner

Wow, that is very nice, and in the less common Woodtone Brown. My dad's aunt & uncle had this, only in white.

It's interesting that at that time, GE had ranges in 24", 36" and 39" widths, but no 30" model until the restyling in 1957.

If it were closer and I had the room, I might just go for it.

That woodtone GE is a beauty - but I'm trying to keep
mine to 30" models. Although, if this was sitting out on the curb (as a few of mine have been), it would be in the back of the van in a matter of seconds!

Kevin, I'll be glad to email the seller to give me directions and to ask him to put it out on the curb. then I'll make sure you take a trip out there to look at the wintery scenery. Voilla, a new stove in the back of your van.

That GE!!!

Is Beautiful, our local Habitat has a woodtone brown GE wall oven and cooktop, the cooktop is one that has pushbuttons in the exhaust hood, unfortunately nom nim wit cut the wires!! it is all there but what fun that would be!

Years ago, we picked up a mint condition double wall oven in woodtone brown. The top oven has the window door, meat thermometer and rotisserie. Each oven is the size of the master oven in a GE range and would hold two Bundt pans on a rack. I was going to use it for baking the pound cakes I sent home for mom to share with friends, but then my mom had to be moved up here and most of the friends are gone or almost gone so it sits on sabatical. Life is funny. As I typed that, I realized I am now as old as most of those people were when I started baking for them more than 35 years ago, but it was a hell of a 35 year period.
