Downy

I am a Downy guy through and through. It has been what my family has used for years. My personal family used Downy until my parents were divorced. Then FS was cut out of the budget. After we purchased our Duet, around 5 years ago, we started slowly introducing it again. My favorites are Clean Breeze and Spring & Renewal, as far as scents go. Recently I have been using Free and Gentle and I love it. I have tried all of the Downy scents. The only infusions scent I like is the Botanical Mist, although other family members use it and I hate how their laundry smells. The yellow(sunlight something or other), green(Mountain Spring), and pink (April Fresh) Downy bottles are vomit inducing. Gain is simply too strong. I am really wanting to try the new Method Beach Sage FS. The newer pink Suggle seems promising as well. But I have MORE than enough FS.

"...it just smelled of melted crayons and loneliness."

Jeff, it's a shame there are no Safeway markets on the Minnesota prairie. Given your description I'd love to try their softener!😂[this post was last edited: 5/22/2016-02:33]

> shame there are no Safeway markets on the Minnesota prairie

Do you have Albertsons on the MN prairie? If so, you might find that softener. Albertsons parent company bought out Safeway, and, at least here I've noticed that Albertsons is increasingly moving towards carrying Safeway house brands.

Another option for Safeway softener

Go on vacation to a place that has Safeway. Just think of the reactions of everyone when you say: "I just had to visit _______ because I wanted a bottle of Safeway fabric softener!"

I too have successfully kicked the habit. A tumble dryer has, several times, produced the desired results with towels and other items.

I also tried using "a large quantity" of white vinegar recently which did help, and the clothes kept that wonderful perfume to them for up to a week after. I wonder whether it deodorises, at all?

I was softener sniffing at Walmart last night and I must concur that Downy's scents are pretty much all 'vomit inducing'!  Snuggle was just too pungent for me.  Heck, I thought about getting a bottle of the pink stuff from Piggly Wiggly!  The older I get the more sensitive I become to smells.  Besides that, I don't think a nurse in a Neurosurgical ICU should wear anything strong.  I have 3/4 bottle of Aqua Di Gio I don't even wear anymore.  I don't want to have to take my shot of Imitrex for a migraine just to wear cologne.  I actually have been on prescription migraine prevention for about 17 years now.

While I'm using Downy Free & Gentle for clothing (Aqua di Gio trumps softener scent) a burgeoning collection of softeners/conditioners clutters the drawer under the washer for bed and bath linens.

The latest: Downy Infusions 'Botanical Mist 'and Downy Unstoppables 'Fresh'. The liquid Unstoppables was $9.00 at ShopKo. The 'Fresh' version has a nice scent. Of course the bottle instructs you to use the Unstoppables beads in conjunction with this fabric conditioner. I can't imagine the migraine that would cause, LOL. The liquid is plenty strong on its own in the final rinse.

Botanical Mist is a little classier-smelling than standard Downy and substantially less expensive than the liquid Unstoppables.

I have to stay out of ShopKo, as they have about six versions of the upscale Infusions and
a couple more of the Unstoppables. My collection will congeal before it gets used as it is, LOL.

UPDATE: The uber-expensive Unstoppables 'Fresh' is a winner; and although it perfumed the entire lower level of the house when the washer drained, the scent remaining after drying is light, but very...nice. I wonder if the 1400 rpm final spin pulls so much water from the load that there just isn't much softener/conditioner left in the fabric. We'll see if the scent hangs on 'til the other set goes on the bed Wednesday.[this post was last edited: 7/10/2016-10:08]

One thing I cannot understand is the fixation with taking already strong scents left behind by detergent/softener, and making them stronger with yet another product...

Although it would help cover up the "unfresh" smell of laundry done only in 40 degree Fahrenheit water...

Maybe Downy will eventually release Downy with Aqua di Gio! LOL

The cologne I used to use (whose name escapes me at the moment) had an entire line of very expensive products; bath wash, deodorant, shampoo. Seem to recall they introduced a liquid scent for laundry. I'd moved on to Aqua di Gio by then.

Sniffing stuff at Big Lots...
Suavital
The blue smelled like jasmine flowers and plastic daycare toys... It danced across your nose leaving a linguring smell of floral plastic baby puke
The yellow smelled like some kind of unidentifible flower with a very strong petrolum jelly smell. It also had some kind of migraine inducing odor that comes with new shower curtains... Kinda like some one had melted vasaline in a rag weed patch and was on a new shower curtain.... It was bad

CUddle so Soft... This smelled like dying celery and roses... It also had a very watery aroma to it... It actually smelled ok, but the waxyness of it was very apperant. I doubt it would do much

The Green Snuggle..This smelled very much of aloe and lettuce... With a hint of water lilly and another plesent "wet" flower... It was very subtle, very nice and very clean

Libre Nacho Downey.... They had very little difference in smells... Im not a fan of mexican downey..This smelled very much like an over perfumed hooker with personal issues..... ANd Bad BO... It gave me an instant smell headache.. I choked and moved on...

Green Cap Downy.... It smelled very bland, but had that a chemical smell of plastic scented flowers and wax....

The Coppertop Downey... This i took a quick wiff of... It smells like sunscreen, sand and overtanned middle aged women... Not great, but it would hide the smell of bad laundry habits easily

Purple Downy... My favorite... It had a very plesant rose smell to it, and it smelled clean and had no plastic/waxy/chemical stench to it... Was quite nice

Snuggle Super Clean

Or something to that effect smells terrible in the bottle, but once in your laundry, it has a classic detergent scent that I can't quite identify. It has grown on me over the last few weeks.

Is this the one you're referencing, Malcolm? Damn it, I think Shopko has this one, LOL.

I really like the Downy Unstoppables 'Fresh' liquid. Not sure how to describe it in an olfactory sense, but if it was sound, it would be a high note, compared to most softeners, which come in as a boomier, lower note; more at the bottom of one's sense of smell. For me---and I know how incredibly subjective these things are---it's the one to beat. The cost is ridiculous ($9.00 for a small bottle) but as scented softener is only used on bed linens and occasionally bath linens, I suppose it's an allowable extravagance.

That's It!

Don't smell it in the store, it is very strong. Just use a reduced amount in your laundry. Sheets, blankets, towels are all I run with it. Wonder why some of these new items aren't available in a 5 dose trial size...
