KD-10 Need Help!

Hey Guys,

Just installed the KD-10 Dishwasher but having some trouble with the water supply fill value.

Took it apart and cleaned it the best I could and the water is going into the dishwasher. When I first installed it there was no water coming out, but now it seems to only fill half way. If I add a gallon of water to the dishwasher it works well, but with three cycles that is three manual fills.

Any help would be great another part or is there anyone that can rebuild this part for me.

Joe are you sure that the water pressure on the line to the dishwasher is up to par? You could simply replace that valve with a later KitchenAid valve, that is what I would do. But you will have to get fancy with figuring out a way to mount it, probably with some hardware store parts.

I have good water pressure. Can someone tell me how much water should be in the bottom of the tub area? Should it be half full or all the way full?

Our 12 fills up to nearly to near the holes of the overflow tube, so pretty full.

Water Value

Can I use any modern water value for a dishwasher or does it need to be a Kitchen-aid?

I hoped someone would have a working original part. I hate to modify it, but if I have no other choice I guess I will do that.

We are having a major wind and rain storm, power is going off and on. Getting ready for power to go out.

No you have to be careful, because some of the modern valves might have a major flow restrictor since they use so much less water per cycle.

So what do I need? What years and what will work? Is there any way to clean this one to work better. I think it just needs a really good cleaning. I clean it and it works much better but I am only getting half full.

Anyone have any ideas?

Bigger Hose going in?

Do I need a bigger hose going into the fill value? I see in the picture that I posted that it has a 3/8 inch going into the value but the other end looks like the 1/2 inch or garden hose size. Right now I have a modern 3/8 3/8 dishwasher line and coupling on the machine. Could this make a difference?

Joe you are going to have to be prepared to experiment to get this to work. I have a ton of experience in bringing these old machines back to life, but sometimes it takes being inventive and failing a few times until you get it right.

I would start with replacing that valve with the one that I posted in the link above. You might have to take that new valve apart and remove the flow restrictor, but I wouldn't do that at first.

The one you recommended has two water inlets and two fill value solenoids with 4 wires. Would I just hookup one fill value? Mine has one fill value and one solenoid with 2 wires.

I found this older fill value, would this work?

Hi Joe, either should work, but no one can tell you for sure until you try it. If you get the dual valve model, you'll simply just have to extended the wiring a bit, but this other single valve model might work as well (although that one is used, so it could be bad from the start).

If for whatever reason you get the new valve hooked up and you are still not getting enough water, you can remove the flow restrictor from the new valve.

How does the flow restrictor remove? Where is it? Would I have to hookup both water lines and solenoids on the new model or just use one water line and one solenoid?

I think the link below will be a better way to go as it looks to be a true universal style valve with an assortment of flow restrictors that you can try.
Like Robert has said. It will take some experimenting to get it right but even if you put in a restrictor that fills faster, you have the overflow in the machine that will let the excess water drain out.
That is the correct water level in your machine as well, as Robert mentioned.
Anything less and you will have questionalble results.

I am sure someone can provide the gpm specs from the service manual so you can match up the correct flow restrictor.

You may do well to search for another machine like yours as a donor unit since these went out of production in the 50's and there is absoluetly nothing available for them except for what is out there on Ebay and maybe from some of the members here.

These machines clean well but you do need really hot water to get good results as the wash period is not all that long. I would insulate the heck out of the tank to retain the heat and maybe even let it fill and rinse once and then wash so everything is warmed up. Since it soesn't really use all that much water, it would not be a real waste of resources to add a prerinse to it.

I will purchase that fill value and will go from there. I will keep everyone informed of my progress with the KD-10. Yes I have really hot water going to the dishwasher, everything else seems to be work fine and up to speed.

Inlet Valve For A KD-10

A KD-10 holds about 2 gallons of water per fill, A WP part# 4170000 valve should work well, the kit that Steve suggested may also work well, on the valve kit use the least restrictive flow washer.

The valve shown in Stevet's link does not come with the inlet fittings. It is made to replace newer style valves and you must use parts from the failed valve to make this valve complete.

Double Value

OK, so here is my question with the double value with two solenoids. Do I need to hookup both water lines and both solenoids to make this one work or can I just hookup one of the water lines and one of the solenoids on the double value?
