My parents, who are wonderful and do insanely nice things for me, showed up with a Thanksgiving present. I am still picking my jaw up off the floor.

Here's a hint:

...and I do too. I'll keep mum to preserve the fun, but will say that I had the privilege to see this wonderful car on my visit last weekend and it's really quite something. Nate was busy entertaining, but next time I shall request a ride in same.

LOL!

Aw, thank you, Scott, and why, yes, we shall go for a ride! (And if we take our mugs, we won't even spill our caw-fee, what with that pillowy ride!)

No, it's no fair spilling the beans on the year. That fuel-injection insignia should be the dead giveaway ;-) I know someone here can call it at a glance...

Nate, fantastic, what a beautiful Coupe de Ville! Yes, a joy-ride is definitely in order, although I think some members (such as myself) will want to drive it as well! ;-)

And fuel-injected to boot, it can't be that old then! Mid-80's perhaps? I'm curious as to whether it's throttle-body or multi-port. The few GM cars from 1990-on (when carburetion was outlawed on new vehicles) we've looked at in auto shop were always TBI. Can't be too sure though...

1981 Cadillac DeVille. 368 CID with the 8-6-4 engine.

Guess who worked for the Cadillac dealer in the 1980's? <:

Very good, Austin!

Thank you very much! :-D I'll get some extra fuel for gratuitous drives. By all means!

It's very much throttle-body injected; two injectors. And it goes through oxygen sensors and air-temp sensors like Kleenex, but gosh, you have to love it.

And the Electronic Climate Control works flawlessly. *flexes toasty toes* :-)

Hi Nate, very nice car!

Yes I worked as service manager for the Cadillac dealer in the 1980's. Those were great cars, but the technology was lacking back then to get the engine electronics right. They ran on 8 cyl. then switched to 6 as the car came up to speed, then at cruising speeds the engine cut down to 4 cyl. In concept the idea was great, but the car shuddered when it was in the 6 mode and was sluggish in 4. They also jerked as the accelerator was depressed from cruising speeds. The engine would have to engage the other 4 cylinders, so double jerk.
We put a manual switch under the dash at the customers request, if they complained. Then the customer could simply lock the engine into all 8 cylinders that way, or engage the 8-6-4 feature is they wished to. Chances are that your car has been locked into "all 8" as well. Most Cadillac customers back then were used to smooooooothness, and did not care for the "rock-a-by-baby" feeling of the 8-6-4 feature.

Our dealership was in a very old building that had multi floor levels. We had to drive the cars up concrete ramps to get the the upper levels, like a parking garage. There was a way for testing only, that the engine could be locked into "4" or"6" via the a-c/heater control (can't recall exactly how anymore) We used to lock them into "4" and chug a lug those big babies up the ramps just for the fun of it! Lord how we would laugh as they chugged up the ramps!

BTW you can check for codes by holding the "off" and "warmer" buttons in on the a/c control head. Hold those in as the engine is running, until double zeros flash onto the display. If all is normal, a 7.0 should come up on the display. You can clear any codes by pressing "off" and "high" at the same time and holding those in. Take the system out of test mode by pressing "Auto".

Cadillacs are the only american car that are any good IMO.
Have been driving them since 1982.
Good luck with yours, and have fun with it! <:

LOL

Rick-- Thanks! Love the pic! I found the diagnostic mode for the ECC readout...the ECM thinks there's no problem and gives me just the 88, dots, and 70, so I suspect it's a sensor that's faulty but reporting within acceptable values.

The 8-6-4 has indeed been disabled on this car, but I would like to investigate it and reenable it for giggles. (Will generally protests in the background, shouting "You'll blow-up the engine!", but I think it'd be okay.) Yes, right now, it's all eight cylinders, all the time.

Before I go playing, though, I've gotta convince DMV that it's worth having in Tucson :-), and then I can get me some plates :-P

Darrel -- No kidding! I need to save up my money and buy my parents a Porsche, or something!!

The way they introduced it was to come up to the apartment...then say "Hey, we have stuff to carry up from the car." I went out, and my dad (Cadillac parked to the right of their Impala) said, "Hey, do you know who drives this Cadillac?" Not recognizing it, of course, I said, "Er, no." He handed me the keys and said, "You do."

Thunk! Jaw on floor. :-)

Bob -- I figure the xBox is good for its fuel economy and cargo-carrying ability. I'll just keep it in the trunk of the Cadillac.

Man Nate, an '81 V-8-6-4 COUPE?!? Wow, what a find. I don't know what is nicer, the ride, or your parents.

In Waterloo, it is still common to see the 1980-1992 cars still runing around - but my favorite is when I see the V-8-6-4 badge, or the infamous HT4100 on the 1982-83 cars. I think by '84 the divison wasn't so proud of the little engine that could and took the badges off.

Now you need to drop a 472 or a 500 with a TH400 for some real fun (if that is what yer into) ;-)

Where's Cory?

Ben

Fun story Nate! Love the way your parents gave you the car.
Look for a switch just under the dash on the drivers side. I am betting there is a switch there to enable the 8-6-4. BTW thank you for calling it a 8-6-4. I used to cringe when people called those a 4-6-8..... And they did quite often.

Tell your boyfriend that there is no danger in running the car as an 8-6-4. It was designed for that. All it does is shut the fuel injectors down for disabled cylinders, and hold the valves open.
It would be kind of fun to drive one of those again! Just for the hell of it. The 368 engine was fine. To bad it was only used in the 1980 and 1981 models. The 1981 models was the only year the engine came as an 8-6-4 however. The 368 engine was much better than the HT-4100 engine that was used from 1982 to the late 1980's. That one was a piece of shit. We replaced engines with wiped out crank and cam bearings all the time. In fact we replaced some of the HT-4100 engines at 4,500 miles! Oh, customers were pissed! Lots of them went to Mercedes for their next car.
