Unfortunately there is no shine left to the interior of the porcelain tub but I guess you can't have everything. I'm not sure if the previous owner painted the agitator cap or if that was original. It's definitely black underneath.
One problem: the pump didn't want to turn at first so I had to get it going by turning the shaft with a pair of pliers and spraying into the shaft with WD40. The pump shaft has a zerk fitting on it so I think if I grease it, it should run better since it didn't seem to pump quite fast enough. Now just have to get a grease gun.
To really make it look nice it should be completely repainted. The top is not porcelain that I can tell and looks as though the original owner repainted it himself. There is one of those "Bondurite" finish stickers on the back of the cabinet so that is probably what was used instead of porcelain.
No lights of any kind unfortunately but it's still pretty cool. Amazingly quiet too for a machine of this age. Love the clunk of the solenoid when it changes from agitate to drain to spin. OK, I'm exhausted now. Hope you like it!
I was pretty tired today as I spent most of the day yesterday working on the machine. The agitator cap looks to be spray painted silver to match the aluminum agitator and I'm not sure if that was factory done or not. That's why it looks a little worn with the black coming through. It really doesn't have much rust on it and I think that was due to the climate controlled basement it was in. The owner must have fiddled with it quite a bit over the years as his calling cards are everywhere in the form of paintbrush strokes everywhere inside the cabinet probably to touch up rust and little pieces of masking tape identifying where each wire went to inside the cabinet. Maybe the former owner was a washer fanatic too and just couldn't leave it alone. If so he'll be happy to know it fell into good hands! Thanks to everyone for all your kind comments. I enjoy sharing this with all of you.
Never knew that WP made metal agitators-Surgilators no less-imagine if they chrome plated it!!Wonder if the aluminum one would fit my WP Imperial.-it has a chromed metal agitator cap.Like the "Areonautical"-"bullet" one in that machine.
I never realized these machines were made with aluminum Agitators. I remember simular models with black and some red Agitators. But this is such a awsome machine. Is the switch at the side for a suds saver?
Peter
was apparently added later and controls turning on and off the hot solenoid so you can have cold water only. The main switch only gives you a choice of warm and hot.
I wanted to take the agitator off and get a picture of it so you could all see it better but it is stuck fast in place. I don't want to damage it so have left well enough alone for now. Any suggestions on how to get it off?
...that WP is. I was also surprised about the aluminum surgilator,...never knew they made them. Have fun with your classic WP and hope you get many more years out of the old workhorse.
Patrick, if you want to remove agitator, remove the cap, then then turn the agitator as you pound on the agitator skirt with your fist. I learned this trick from Bob of Hollywood a few years ago.
