Hi all.

First off - Happy New Year and best wishes to everyone for the New Year.
May it be a successful and prosperous one for everyone at Discuss o Mat.

The main purpose of this thread is to let people showcase the machines that surfaced during 2010 and that they were able to offer a home to.

These can be ebay buys, thrift and second hand shop discoveries, swaps and exchanges, rescue missions and inherited machines. Any avenues really.

Here in the UK, 2010 has proved to be a very successful year for machine preservation, with the year offering up a decent list of vintage machines and a number of uber rare classics surfacing for the first time in many, many, many years.

Be great to see what people worldwide have managed to find.

I wonder what 2011 will produce!?!

Once again, happy new year all.

Regards
Paul

January 2010

Towards the end of 2009, I received an out of the blue e-mail from a lady offering me an Instruction manual.

Her machine had stopped working and had been written off buy the serviving bloke who had cared for it for many years.

She had discovered the site and an old thread containing details of her machine, clicked on my user name, and had taken the time to offer me the manual.

Pursuing the subject, I enquired about the machine itself and whether it was available for disposal.
Word came back that I could have the machine for gratis, if I wanted it, and that she would much prefer it to go to a good home that the tip.

Hoping that the machine would be close buy, my heart sank when the response came back that it was in Chichester - a fair few hundred miles away, on the south coast of England! Biting the bullet and having got my head around the trip, a collection date early in the then new year 2010 (weather permitting) was agreed and myself and Rob headed down south in a snowy early January.

Dating from October 1982, the machine was a Hotpoint 18371 Super Electronic with instruction manual and full service history.

Needs repairing still, as the previous owner was told that the machine had jumped off its suspension, blowing the module in the process. Given time, I am sure it will be energised again one day and we welcomed our third Hotpoint 18-series to the collection...

Hotpoint Liberator De Luxe 1851-03

My only find for 2010 was the liberator de luxe 1851/03, a machine I have been longing for, four some time, it came via the thread for the liberator de luxe 1828/02 and another member wishing to move it on.

This machine is still work in progress, it’s a shame the bad weather over December stopped the restoration, at -15c it was too cold to work out in the garage, now bloody illness have put a stop on it, still much to do and I’m looking forward to completing the restoration soon.

Not much of a photo, she’s not at her best in this one.

2010 was an over whelming year for me, appliance wise!

Hello and Happy New Year to everyone out there, I hope 2011 will be at least as good, if not much far better then 2010 for us all!

Mike, that Bendix set is absolutely stunning! WOW!

Now I have to say… among all my 2010 acquisitions, I was not specifically looking for any of them. For many it was “right place at the right time” or I was just looking through Craig’s List and happened across an ad for something that caught my eye.

Starting with the beginning of 2010, Andy (RedCarperDrew) and his wife drove down from Reno, Nevada (about 9 hours one way) and brought “a few machines” to trade for a turquoise, 1959 Maytag washer and dryer I had for him. He brought this beautiful 1970 GE V-16 program washer and matching dryer, the 1973 Frigidaire 1-18 washer & matching dryer, plus this little 1971 GE portable washer (made by Hitachi).

Two weeks later, my friend Scott here from AW made me an offer I couldn’t refuse on this 1970 Hoover 0515. I brought it home along with a bunch of spare parts. Then in December 2010, it was resurrected and now lives again! (Thanks again Tim!)

Another week goes by and a friend gives me his 2004 Whirlpool Calypso washer after buying a new Kenmore Elite front load steam washer.

Then the following week… I go and buy the same model Kenmore Elite washer he did, just in a different color. The only reason I bought it, it was on close out and the price was marked down 65%, more then $1000 off!!! How could I NOT buy it, right?

Now late March 2010. A friend in San Diego e-mails me a link to a Craigs List ad for an old Bendix front load washer & dryer. It turns out to be a 1953 or 1954 Bendix model WEG-H, “Magic Heater” washer! Imagine, mid 50’s front load washer with a built in heater! I had no idea! Of course I HAD to go buy them!

Then in early May, Robert (our AWESOME webmaster) posts info that a guy (local to me) listed a 1959 Lady Kenmore combo washer/dryer (in PINK no less) on Ebay. I contact the seller and go look at it since it’s only 30 minutes away. After looking at it and talking with the seller for a while, I make him an offer to take it off Ebay and sell it to me. He declines (much to his regret, I’m sure) saying he’s going to let the auction run it’s course. That was completely understandable. However, I was the only bidder and won the LK Combo for A FRACTION of what I offered him the week prior! I picked it up just a day before flying to Minneapolis for Robert & Fred’s fabulous Wash-In.

Managed to get my lovely late 80's Electrolux BW450 slimline dishwasher this year. This is a fantastic dishwasher - quick, quiet and gets everything spotless.

At the end of April, a month after having the most AMAZING time of my life at Robert & Fred’s Wash-In, I’m wasting time searching Craig’s list again and come across an ad for this 1963 Lady Kenmore 800 washer. Again it’s less then 30 minutes away and I go meet the seller. It was his mothers washer for many years, but she’s no longer around and he’s selling the house. The washer more or less works (it tries to agitate and spin at the time) but it does need a full rebuild… bearings, seals, pump, etc.

But hey, considering I only paid $10 for it, I couldn’t pass it up!

On September 7th, Malcolm (MRB627) posts a Craig’s List link here on AW for this set. The washer is exactly the same as one I brought home from Phoenix, AZ over a year earlier, but unfortunately it was too far gone to be repairable. Since this one is in much better condition and has a matching dryer, on Saturday, Sept 11, I drove from LA to Yuma, AZ and back (11 hours round trip) to pick them up.
