Maytag 806 continually off balance

I have a 1979 806A and find it continually off balance during the start of the spin. Is this a common problem with this model? I take great care in how it is loaded but if there is anything even slightly heavier in the load it stops and I have to readjust the load.

I have a 1970 Kenmore piano key and it rarely will go off balance.

If this sounds out of the ordinary is there anything that might be causing it in the mechanics of the machine that should be examined?

rare, but something to check would be weak suspension springs....

and since this is a spin drain machine, sometimes too much water in a load can cause the load to shift during ramp up...

does it do it with a non clothes, water only load?

It could be, cause I tend to like to have a little more water in the load. But on empty with water only it is fine.

Could it have worn snubber pads?
I remember years ago my parents' LA511 would walk all over the laundry room. Maytag guy came out, replaced snubber felt pads. Never walked again!

Worn or dried out felt pads would not cause the washer to "go off balance".   It would make the tub a little more difficult to move around, but it would still move.   If they were very worn or moved out of place, you would hear a metal on metal grinding noise as the tub moved around.

Most likely too much water for the load size along with mixing heavy and lighter items in the same load.

 

Worn out or dry snubber pads will make the washer walk but will not cause the off balance switch to trip.

Is it sitting level?  I've seen basement floors that slope because of a floor drain, but the washer needs to sit level front to back, and side to side.

When I delivered the washer and helped Floyd move it into place and install it, we made sure it was level.

Well I have some suspension pieces from a washer, similar to the one in the pic, that I'm junking.  If you want, I can take pictures of what I have, and if you need them, they're yours.

 

 

I also have a pump, water valve, and a one speed motor.  I'm probably going to put those on Ebay.

To me, that doesn't make sense. If the snubber pads being bad, or dry will make it walk, wouldn't that also throw it off balance?

Often Out Of Balance MT Washer

Hi Kenny, in order for the out-of-balance-switch to cut a MT washer off the inner tub assembly has to move a certain distance to hit the cut off arm. If the snubber assembly has lost it lubrication or worse its pads it does not allow the suspended assembly to move freely and the entire machine will walk but will shut off on the OOBS.

 

If you don't know how the suspension works in an AW try putting an OOB load in a DC MT and put the shipping collar in the lid opening with an OOBL in the washer, the washer will NOT shut off and it will walk all over the basement, LOL.
