I'm on holiday, so I can fix the washer and dryer, but I've just spent about three hours reading through postings on this list. You guys are amazing. Now I want a pair of centre dial 70s vintage Maytags.
Well, ours were made in Dec 1980. White, not Almond. The biggest problem is that the washer, after filling, starts and then after a couple of seconds kicks down into slow and then shuts off. It seems like an overload/thermal protector has shut it down (there is a "click").
Any suggestions?
My wife wants to get new ones.
I'll tell you about the dryer later; at least its functional.

The "click" sounds to me like a balance switch/lid switch problem activating incorrectly, but as you state the machine goes into a lower speed and then goes off, it could be a capacitator problem with the motor start up,or even old worn belts. How does the machine spin when empty? Any problems there? How old are the belts? The motor is on a spring loaded sled, which needs to move back and forth, as there is no clutch on a Maytag, so genuine Maytag belts in good conditon are a must. Bad belts could make the whole thing trip and turn off, but usually this occurs in the spin cycle, so test that without clothes or water. Phil

Yea dude, let us know about the spin. I have a set of center dial Maytag, rebuilt by yours truly. That has never happend to me before. I would bet the motor.

Steve

It is the motor. I took both belts off (they were fine) to let the motor spin freely. It still laboured, slowed, and shut down (but less quickly).
The machine was not in great shape so I won't replace the motor. It looks like my wife will get her wish.
Thank you for the help.
