Maytag Fabrimatic

I am contemplating trading in my 1999 Kenmore Washer and 1996 GE dryer for a matching set called a Maytag Fabrimatic. It is not the center dial Maytag, but the tub and agitator look very similar. I can get these for $225 delivered and set up and taking my old ones away on a trade. Does this sound like a good deal? Are the machines very good? Better than what I have? What years would they have been made?

You would probably be trading just to trade I say keep your Kenmo's. Nothing exciting about the Fabrimatic at all. More of a BOL machine, one speed motor.

I kind of thought that, but was taken in by that nice agitator. However, it is a rather boring machine. The store also has a pushbutton set of whirlpools probably from the early nineties. Would they be any better than my Kenmore 90 series from 1999(TOL).

Sit tight and wait for something real kool to come along.
I know of someone right here in Atlanta, for instance, that has a nice late-sixties SQ solid-tub washer for sale. You just never know what might turn up.

I agree with Gyrafoam, Maytags are great machines, but boring post 1978 in terms of design. Great mechanical machine, but boring black face consoles in the early 80's make them look like a low end Monkey Wards or (gasp) a White Westinghouse. There are far better Maytags to collect and far more interesting washers that predate the 80's, although the mechanics are worth saving.

I'm keeping mine

Thanks for the help. I think I have decided to keep what I have, eventhough the washer bumps and knocks when it spins and the dryer scorches clothing. The man only offered me $25 for a trade. I think he thought he was dealing with a sucker. I noticed he had the exact same washer as I have on his sales floor for $275. Maybe some day I'll find an old Maytag or Speed Queen belt drive set. Oh yeah, when I asked him about belt drive machines he said that there was absolutely no difference in their performace when compared to a DD. He said the DD were his preference. Tim

Hey Steve, can you give us more info on that 60's Speed Queen? How much? Solenoid or reversing motor? Working or needs repair/restore? Any chance of some pics?
