Maytag Light-Up Dash

Hi there!

Well, I've been meaning to do research on the washer and dryer that accompanied the purchase of my 1940's home. Unfortunately, I've put it off for almost 3 years and what I believe to be a vintage washer and dryer have just been collecting dust in my garage. I did use them when we first moved in because they are adorable. Sadly, sometimes I care more for efficiency than keeping things just because they are adorable, so I traded them out for a modern set.

That being said, I'm still very fond of them and would like to know more about them. It may be a while before I get the actual reference number off of them due to the fact that they are in a hard to reach spot in my garage.

Just curious if anyone can go ahead and shed some light on them. I remember a distinct buzz or ringing sound. I know that they lit up buy a florescent tube bulb on the control panel, or "dash" if you will.

I believe that the two on the right side of the screen in this picture from Gansky1's collection on page #8 are either identical or very close to the Maytag set I have shamelessly neglected.

Any info at all is greatly appreciated!

Lighted controls.

Do your machines have a dial in the center or just a row of buttons? You may also want to look up a Maytag 806, these were later lighted-control washers and are slightly different but more common, having been produced from 1966 to 1980. The machines pictured in your link are of a style produced from the late 1950s through model year 1965. Also, on the control panels, are there a small pair of round buttons, one red and the other black on the lower left side like those on the dryer in the link?

Maytag did not change their designs much over the years. It's one of the most reliable and easiest to maintain washers ever produced. I have several in my house that are providing reliable service and have outlasted MANY other competitors' machines several times over.

Can you post a picture of your machines? In a perfect world, a picture of the washer's interior (with agitator) would also be helpful in identification. If you can access the model number tags, likely on the back of the washer and inside the door on the dryer (please correct me if I'm mistaken) you can tell the model number. From that we can tell you where it was positioned in the model lineup, what features it has, and nifty stuff. If you can read the serial numbers, the last 2 characters are letters and they indicate the month and year of manufacture. Maytag produced their machines in Newton, IA. If the model number of the washer ends with an "S," then it should have 2 drain hoses and would be equipped with a "Suds Saver" which saves a great deal of water. Suds savers are old technology but are remarkably green. There are other threads on suds savers in the Automaticwasher archives.
