Ben, thanks for sharing this merchandising info! Love the shots of the storefronts featuring Maytag appliances. Some other cool 'accessories' in the user kitchen shots, too! I remember the big Eaton's store in downtown Montreal had the clear plastic demo dishwasher as part of their Maytag display area. I used to play with it until the sales people chased me out... What great information and memories it brings back!

MAYTAG DW NOISE LEVELS
The first MT DWs were a little quieter until they went to the unique but ill fated belt drive system. If they hadn't been so cheap and put a real V-belt drive with a spring loaded pivoting motor for proper belt tension they would have been much quieter and much more durable.

In 1949 the Fair Appliance Co. of Wausau sponsored an oldest Maytag contest for Marathon County. My mom's aunt and uncle submitted the 1917 Maytag that my great-grandparents bought new. Aunt Adela won 1st prize, she had a choice of either a new AMP, or a wringer. She choose an E2L because an automatic was considered a "water waster". She hated it, and traded it a year later for a Speed Queen wringer instead. I wish I had that 1917 Maytag today.

I found the information about Maytag's television advertising very interesting--especially the programs the company bought time on. "Mary Tyler Moore;" "M*A*S*H;" "Maude;" the various movie nights--a wonderful snapshot of a time when the three big networks still dominated television viewing.
By the way, my grandmother had a Maytag AMG washer; it ran for years without a problem. In the late 1960's, she replaced the Maytag with a Kenmore 500; it continued to give good service after we inherited the washer when my grandparents died. Loved it--best washer we ever owned (and we owned a Westinghouse Laundromat and a Kenmore 800 push-button series from the early 1960's that needed repairs all too often).

Thank you for posting that! I forgot all about "the dry look"! I still think those reverse-rack Maytag dishwashers were among the best ever made. And it's true, the best designed diswashers, in my experience, never needed adjustable racks.
