Maytag problem

I picked up a newer Maytag washer last week. Model MAV6000AWW. Runs quiet, doesn't leak or anything, but it seems to want to go out of balance. I checked the suspension springs, all are in place. Nothing obvious wrong underneath.

Any thoughts?

The snubber is worn or if the x-mission is slinging grease, it gets the snubber greasy. The snubber and base should be "dry". They recommended using corn starch when replaceing the snubber but i rarely did.

No grease anywhere, so it must be the snubber. Looks like ya gotta remove the brake, like the older ones.

also check the balance ring...i had one someone left outside in the winter...water inside froze and busted...replaced and it settled down...who knew!

This one doesn't use a balance ring, that I can see.

There is no tub mounted balance ring on this unit. With a unbalanced load, it's actually designed to spin slower as the tub moves around unless it's grossly out of balance. Check the legs on the washer. The front two are adjustable like a dependable care while the back two are 'self-leveling' by using a see-saw arrangement similar to a Whirlpool/Kenmore washer. These rear legs can 'stick' in one position and not adjust causing the washer to vibrate and move around. Inspecting and/or lubing the self adjuster assy is almost mandatory with these Magic Chef/Norge machines.

Otherwise, you may be in for a snubber ring change which involves dropping the trans thrust bearing/pulley assy and the brake, releasing all the tub springs and lifting the whole 'tree' out to get to it. Not fun...

I'm going to try the snubber ring. Feet seem to be OK. It's probably why someone gave up the machine.

The brake does need be removed to replace the snubber. I have cheated a few times by switching 3 of the 6 screws holding the brake stator to long screws. It let me "sneek" the old snubber out and the new one in. If you have the "brake tool" its just easy to use it than fuss with the screws. One other note, the tub and suspention should be removed. I tryed replacing the snubber with the machine still put together and it just doesnt work.

Thanks! I have the regular Maytag brake tool, will it work on this machine?

Regular Maytag brake tool will NOT work on the Herrin-built washers. The brake tool attaches to the end of the tranny shaft and you wind up and compress the brake spring to remove the bolts that hold the whole package together. Then you unwind the spring slowly and remove all the components. Then you will see the 3 bolts that hold the tranny to the baseplate.Hope this helps. The part # for the brake tool escapes me at the moment. I think it's a norge style part #...35-XXXX.

MAV6000: Norgetag

I believe any of the Maytag models starting with MAV in the model number were the Norge-style machines. SAV machines were the disatrous Amanatags. LAT and LSE machines were the true Maytag "Dependable Care" machines.

Success!!!

As I started tearing into it this morning, I saw the rear legs were bound up. Hmmmm, as I sprayed them with WD40, and got them working again. But when I took the front off, I saw a lot of plastic dust around the bottom of the mechanism, and figured I needed to change the snubber.

After removing the cabinet, and belt, I was able to remove the suspension springs, and lift the whole mechanism off the base, and turn it over. Even left the pulley on. Then I loosened 6 screws, that held a cover on the brake, and was able to slide the old snubber ring out, and the new one in. Reversed proceedure, and it's back up and running. I don't know if that's the factory approved method, but it worked!

It still bounces a bit in spin, but then I figured it's a Magic Chef, and it's probably normal.
