Hi All!
Does anyone have a timer for a Maytag washer model 142 they would like to sell? (the quick-indexing older style) The original timer for my grandmother's 142 was replaced several years ago due to a broken wire terminal. I replaced it with an A700 timer, but it doesn't have the nice "chink" sound the original had. I was going to have the original timer rebuilt, but it seems to have disappeared, probably thrown out by my over zealously clean mother! Any help is appreciated!

Hi Bobby, I don’t blame you one bit for wanting the “ker-chuck” sound back. I love that about most of my vintage machines. I should record that and have that be the ring-tone on my cell phone LOL.

If you can find the old timer, the part that advances the dial is interchangeable with the new timer. You see in this picture below is a part called the escapement? This is what makes that beautiful sound and causes the timer to move in a fast increment.

If you can’t find the original timer, you can always find an escapement, I’m not sure but I might even have one laying around here somewhere. What is the timing interval on those Maytag timers, 30 seconds?

Found! Cher-Clunk ~

Hey Bobby -

I had a few extra 142 timers sitting around. This one happens to be a suds saver timer - PN 2-1166. Tested the motor/escapement earlier this evening and enjoyed the lovely 30 second pause before the wonderful sound of 'cher-clunk'! Appears to have been a replacement timer. Not sure if it is a rebuild or an OEM replacement.

Shoot me an email if this would work ~

Hey Everyone:
Thanks so much for what you've done! Ben, mine is not a suds saver model, so I don't know if that will effect which timer must be used. Robert, notice the difference in the timer motor placement between the new and old styles. The motor and escapement on the original "ker-chunk" timers is underneath, not directly behind. With this difference, would they still be interchangeable? Ben, if you have a spare, I'd love to buy one from you. I miss that damn "ker-chunk". BTW, mom calls this weekend while I'm in Provincetown- says the 608 dryer is making a funny noise. Ye gods, why do I let my family use my machines??????????

Most likely yes.

I have 2 old Maytag timers.

One is part# 2-1230. This one is in a Maytag plastic bag, and has a sticker on it from when it was rebuilt in 1968. Appears not to have been used since.

The other one is used, and is part# 2-3179. Let me know if you're interested.
