Mid 70's Avocado Center Dial Kenmores

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Jon -

That is one gorgeous set. It's a 1975 500. Only the third I've ever seen. One that RedCarpetDrew had, and one that was also Avocado in a used appliance store back in the 90s.

They look like a particularly nice set!

I can't tell for sure, but it looks like that dryer has a long-lasting version of Wrinkle Guard, judging by that big blank space on the upper-right side of the dial.

Wouldn't that be an unusual feature for a 500-series dryer, or were they putting it on everything by then?

David - That's a Penta-Vane agitator, a large capacity version of the straight-vane essentially. It was used 1973-1986. It is a bit more 'refined' than a straight-vane, basically not as splashy, or as much like spanking your laundry with a ping-pong paddle as the straight-vane is.

Retropia - The early to mid 70s had feature-laden models. Yes, for a 500 series the dryers were traditionally timed-dry only, but this one does indeed have wrinkle-guard and auto-termination dry. The dryer up from this one had a full-width door and an electronic sensor, but this is a very nice pair for a 500.

That was rectified the next year, as the 60/600 series was far less than these - timed dry only, and a one-speed washer.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU JON!

Jon, your help is very much appreciated with this set!

Today Jon went to look at the machines for me, and paid the seller. I had overnighted the money to Jon and I had worked that out with the seller yesterday, and Jon graciously was willing to help. Thanks again Jon!

I've always appreciated this era Kenmore, and I think this set may well wind up in my house laundry room, where only two belt-drives have graced before.

Too cool Jon. Can't say it enough - THANKS!

That's wonderful to hear, that someone rescued them. I just couldn't do it right now. I have too much stuff and too little time already.

I'm glad that someone from here saved them. :)

Jons1077, the parents had that machine with the brushed chrome on each side of the panel instead of the woodgrain, either way they were "lookers". If i am not mistaken that is the largest of the tubs in the Kenmore line up. The set replaced a Maytag 106 washer and a spacemate westy dryer. The Kenmore could wash almost twice as much as the std tub Tag. alr2903
