Miele Laperla(II) water hardness setting

Hi,
Anyone know why with the USA version of this washer, you cannot have the water hardness set to "auto"? The instructions are quite obtuse as it's obvious the display parameter that shows the water hardness is meant for the "auto" setting (that does not exist with USA settings). To set the water hardness, you have to set the hardness in the parameter for external water softener...
I've been in the service menu and the only way to get auto is to set the unit as a European unit(which obviously I did not do)...

I have a Miele LaPearla dishwasher. The dishwasher adjusts itself to water hardness. You dont have to do a thing. You dont even have to adjust for an outside water softener. One thing if you change the language as I do from English US to English GB the cycles change a bit and not only in name but in how they function.
But to answer your question the dishwasher is already set to auto for water hardness. It senses every time it takes water in. My water here in Mass runs about 9d to 11d. The dishwasher will tell you what your water hardness is.

Actually...

I have the LaPerla II as well and the water softner is not self adjusting as in the first generation LaPerla. You are instructed in the Owners Manual to set the water hardness manually by accessing the "Settings Menu" then "External Water Softner" then select the degree of water hardness. I know this becuase for the first month I would check the water hardness that the dishwaher was "sensing". It constantly read "0". So I called our water department and was told that the hardness of the water was just over 6 gpg. While that isn't hard, it isn't soft either. Once I made the change in the dishwasher, the resuts I got were even better. I included the link to the Manual for the LaPerla II on Miele's website. I hope this helps out.

I wonder if the hardness sensor is still physically present on the US LaPerla II but has been deactivated through the programing. Is there a setting in the service menu to activate it so that the machine "knows" it has that sensor?

Thats odd...now why would Miele put it in my generation LaPearla and not the LaPearla 2?? You would think that they would have kept that feature since it makes it easier for the dishwasher to adjust itself. Learn something every day!

I am not sure why they put it in the first generation La Perla and not the second one. Also, you'll notice that they moved the Salt Resivoir to the bottom of the tub; it is no longer on the door. I am willing to bet they did that because people were pouring detergent in it.

I am not sure if it still has the sensor or not. I have been through the "Settings" menu and haven't found anything other than "External Water Softner" and "Water Hardness". And all the "Water Hardness" shows is what you've entered into the "External Softner" setting.

The only reason I can think of why they'd deactivate the sensor or remove it completely is that it must have been causing problems with consumers. Over on GardenWeb I did see a few posts about people complaining that their glasses were etching. But that could have had to do as much with the soft water as it could've too much detergent. Whatever the reason, I am sure Miele had a good cause for making the changes.

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed this...if you look at the UK user manual, it's the same but you can tell our manual(US/CAN) was altered from this as the UK version is clear that the parameter that tells you the water hardness actually is what it reads...it makes no sense to have to put in a water softener hardness if you don't have one and on top of that, whatever you put in this just copys over to the water hardness reading...why would they bother with the water hardness reading parameter if it's just a copy of the external software setting...

I have the service manual and have found that if you change the type of dishwasher to EU or anything other than US, the setting for water harness.."auto" comes back...however, in these models the salt resovoir must be still in the door as when I try to power back up with these settings, it state's its missing the salt door...

I will call Miele to find out what's up...
There is also a mistake in their service manual as the 2872 is listed that the setting for the model type be the type where the salt is in the door but in reality this is wrong...it should be the type in the bottom...mine was set to the type that it's in the door (I bought a show model from Miele direct which was updated to the latest firmware, etc...)...
Hmm...how to check with Miele without letting them know I was in the service settings...

No problem...will do. I have to get a replacement clothes washer leg from them that I backed out too far and got the nut stuck in the rubber(tried everything to back the nut off the thread but it ain't moving!)...
I think I'll just get a PR response but of course I will let you know.
