Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

OMG Jimmy the dryer looks like it is in just as mint condition as the washer. Congratulations! That has to be one of the most fun designs Norge had ever produced.

Congratulations Jimmy! You have one of the last Norge gas dryers with the variable heat input. Most all of them only had one operating thermostat so only one temperature, but the heat input could be varied from a small flame to a large flame. With the high air flow, the dryer could not get too hot for delicates on the small flame. The older Timeline-style Norge gas dryers had a big red bar that could be moved in an arc under the lid in the top for high to low burner input. The drilled-port cast iron burner in your dryer has the flames burning along the top, right? I think it was a few years later that they turned the burner over so that the holes were on the bottom and supposedly less likely to clog with lint.

Did you manage to get the drying rods for inside? It was a gray, spring loaded, tubular rectangle that fit between two vanes. If you had one vane at the 6 o'clock position, the rack fit between the two vanes at the top of the drum so that delicates could be hung or draped over the rods so that they would blow in the breeze. If one vane was at the 12 o'clock position, the rack sat on the two vanes in the lower part of the tub to hold stuffed animals and shoes.

The stop 'n dry dial was the most elegant way Norge had for lifting the drum off the drive roller. It sure beat the little T-shaped knob down behind the lint door and was not so likely to get in the way as the pull-down lever at the top of the door. It tended to droop down a bit with age.

Enjoy your newest treasure!

Too pretty for words! Congrats on another wonderful matched set!

I wonder, looking at the design of both the washer and dryer consoles, that they might look more "unified" if the dryer was on the right of the washer...

Jimmy ...

What a FANTASTIC set!! Wow ... you must have been absolutely thrilled to match them up!!

Those consoles are incredible; so stately looking!! :-)

CONGRATULATIONS!!

Geoff

congrats Jimmy

I remember that washer from when I visited befor, I thought it was cool by itself- now with the matching dryer it look even better ! The dryer with the specialty dialing cycles reminds me of the Westinghouse "computer " control. Jeff

Hey Jimmy
How cool is that !
I'm really happy that you found that matching dryer.
You truly are the King-of-the-Matched-Sets.

Jim

That has to be the most beautiful set ever unearthed. I must have missed the post that gave the history of these machines...

Now all you need to complete your new laundry area is a Norge gas water heater and your laundry will look just like that POD...

Weren't the Norge gas dryers subject to burner rusting? I thought I recalled a post on that topic, and this one seems to be in such great condition. Seems like it was hardly used..

Tomturbomatic, "interesting" about the small to large flame control on the older TimeLines. We had that dryer until I was 10.75 years old, but I odn't recall seeing that under the top lid that gave access to the flame lighting. Maybe it was better I dind't know about it, lol. I have to admit, I always wondered why there wasn't a temperature control on ours, but I thinnk ours was a BOL cuz it didn't have a light in it the panel. Our '64 Norge dryer, the top'n'dry feature control was on the control panel, it was a sliding lever that mirrored the variable water level position on the washer.

Thanks guys, I appreciate all the cheer on this find. It was a dream come true to make the very rare washer a matched set! It took a couple of years to find it, but the basic philosphy is not to give up, because somewhere out there is your dream machine.

And Peter 770, you are absolutely right, they do look better with the washer on the left, as in the Ad photos. This is just a temporary setting until I get the whole laundry room replumbed and redesigned.........and darn this dryer sure is heavy to move! Jimmy

"FilterFlo":

I looked at this thread through and through. That is a beautiful TOL Norge set. I especially liked that "clock" feature that was seen on the washer. What does that do??? Does it allow you to program the washer to start at any schedule time you choose???

Also, I noted the "timeline" feature on both, the washer and the dryer. I liked the way Borg-Warner has pulled out all of the stops with this set??? I don't think anything they made after these don't even remotely match the coolness and wow factor of this set.

And that dryer looked like it was in mint condition??? Was the washer the same way when you got it??? Or did you have to put some work into it to get it back into shape after you've gotten it???

What year are those beauties anyway??? I'm guessing 1958-60.

I happen to live in Washington, D. C. where there is a Smithsonian Institute. Would you be interested in donating these to the Smithsonian (LMAO -- just kidding)???
