Does anyone of you know who manufactured Modernmaid ranges for Raytheon? Mine is over 25 y/o and nothing gave up on me except for the oven lightbulb that surrendered for the first time 2 weeks ago... So I'd like to know.

Thanks.

Modernmaid

Who!!! A name I haven't heard in a long time... vaguely familiar to me... Thanks!

Caloric still in existence ( I doubt) or has it been swelled up by a corporation?

found this on the net

5 Extinct Appliance Brands That Died Too Soon

Caloric
Why we loved it: Caloric Corporation existed as the Klein Stove Company out of Philadelphia from 1883, until the Caloric brand was introduced in 1903. The company gained fame in the 1950s and 60s for offering a full line of matching kitchen appliances, designed to be purchased as a set for upscale new homes.
Why it went away: The business was acquired by Raytheon in 1967, then eventually sold to Maytag—now Whirlpool—in 2002. There's some chance this dead brand may rise again, zombielike. Whirlpool sold the brand to JMM Lee Properties in 2011, which subsequently announced that new Caloric-branded appliances will hit the market in the near future.

Modernmaid made a lot of Sears Kenmore built in appliances from the 1970s into the 90s. Jenn Aire like ranges, etc. I hear there was a GE cooktop as well that was made by Modernmaid.

Modern Maid I think was the only Manufacturer that built a Eye Level Oven with a Four Burner Cooktop and a Dishwasher below.

That's a design I think could really make it if redesigned and built properly.  It would be great for Studio, Condos and real tiny kitchens.

I like the name and remember it from 60s and 70s Better Homes magazines, when I was actively looking for appliance ads in about... 1980 at the public library.

The dishwasher in a stove I always thought was unique. Back then, I was absolutely stimulated and confused at how they did it. lol.

Here's another AWorg "exclusive" discussion of Modern Maid.

I had one...........

I had a Modern Maid single wall oven from 1956 that was made by Tennessee Stove Works. This was before I had the Hotpoint Customline wall oven.

The built-in toaster and food warmer drawer were also sold under the Toastmaster name. As the ad says, this is from a time that Modern Maid was a part of McGraw-Edison, as was Speed Queen. A little later they were bought by Raytheon, who already owned Amana and Caloric. I think I've seen the range-DW combo under the SQ name also.

The dishwasher is most likely a D&M product.

Modern Maid Kitchen Appliances

Basically were sold through kitchen remodelers builders etc only. They had several interesting appliances, but the quality was always lacking.

They basically only had built-in appliances, their DWs were always D&M which sort of set the stage for the rest of the junk they built.

I never saw any appliance at Sears that MM had anything to do with, MM did build the built-in wall-ovens and cook-tops for Montgomery wards for many years.

We still work on quite a few Cook-N-Clean centers, once built into a kitchen they are hard to get rid of, we have come-up with clever ways to get a decent DW under the CNCC when the POS D&M DW gives up.

MM was originally Tennessee Stove Works. At some point in the early 80s, I saw a large GE brushed chrome electric cook top with a griddle between the two back surface units and the controls in a line between the two front units. It was in a huge new home built on the periphery of Marjorie Post's Hillwood Estate. The Gay Garden Club went on a tour of Hillwood and some of us stopped by the new home afterward. The cooktop reminded me of Modern Maid and also looked kinda lightweight for a GE product. I told John about it and he confirmed that it was a Modern Maid product.
