Moving to Austin, TX...Should I buy an LG Steam Washer?

I’m moving to Austin, TX and will be buying a new washer and dryer when I get there. I’m considering buying the LG Steam Washer WM2688H.

I read the thread about service and would rather not hear about the service. If I get them, I’ll buy the 5 year extended warranty and if they break I’ll hook-up another machine until the service comes out to fix them and then get rid of them.

Do LG’s clean well? Consumer reports only rated the 2 LG washers they tested a “GOOD” in washing performance. How’s water extraction?

Does it have a diagnostic mode? How do you active the diagnostic mode?

Does it take a long time for it balance before the final spin like the Kenmore HE3t/HE4t? Does it add more water for bulky items or perm/press? Does it fill while spinning like the Kenmore HE3t/HE4t does between the spin and the rinse? I would like to know what you think as far as how they clean and work.

cleans well

I have to admit that my 2-year old LG really cleans well. It was hard for me to adjust to a front load machine with the low water level, but the clothes come out very clean. The Permanent press cycle uses a higher water level (thanks Bob), so I use it more often. The water extraction is excellent and it does a good job at balancing the load before the spin. My machine lived through our two feet of flood water (Katrina) and still works fine! We did have to replace the dryer after the flood. I would buy this machine again. Todd

Todd, I remember that wash-in with you and Arthur. We played with the Skinny-Minni, rollermatic, and the 1-18s and to top it all off, Best Buy truck came and delivered the sparkling new LG's.

mine is great

My LG is going on 6 years old, works perfectly, extracts water very well (1200rpm) and has never broken once.
It washes silk and wool (I don't have any synthetics) beautifully.
Everything ccomes out very clean and very well rinsed.
Having said that - I have never heard a kind word about their service in the 'States.
Over here - well, who knows? I never met anyone who had one break and they are very common here - and have been since about 8/9 years ago.

Yep, the washer made it through the flood ... really surprised me. Jason, we had a good time that day playing with the vintage machines, too. I need to crank them up again soon; but, there always seems to be another project that's more pressing. But, that LG washer was definitely worth the money. I toyed with the idea of the Oasis, but decided that I am better off keeping the LGs.

I love my LG washer. It's the most intelligent appliance I've ever owned. Its washing ability is unbelievably good, CU has its head up its own ass as usual. I have a model that extracts at 1200 rpm. I would go with the highest extracton speed, steam or no steam. My only complaint with the LG is that it takes forever to heat the water in the Sanitary cycle. I would also like more flexibility in selecting wash and rinse temperatures for each cycle. The only other thing I would tell you to do, however, is research Miele. According the Miele expert on this site, Miele has a new huge capacity machine that's available right now in Europe, but no news as to when they're going to market it in the US. If Miele does market this model in the US and it's offered as a 220V model, I would go for that. I believe it extracts at 1600 rpm. Miele's quality is without equal in this country. It would be worth waiting for.

I have the LG 3677 combo I do like the machine seems to be built durable and features many but I am the not happy with the service. I will try to attach what I already posted:

I need to make some comments about the LG service (It Sux)
I have the LG 3677 Tromm Combo washer / dryer. I do like the machine However. I purchaced it almost 2 years ago from a private appliance store in White Plains New York. I had the machine for 3 months. First I remember after a few weeks the machine leaked from the dispensor and from the door. The cycle times were not running correctly. I had the service from a company called Metro in New Jersey come out nobody in my area in Westchester at that time. The guy didn't know what he was doing and totatly screwed up the machine. Situation worse and to make a long story realy short and a big hassel LG agreed to have the machine replaced. I had the machine for 9 months and it developed a slow leak from the bottom of the front door. I called for service and they found a local guy. He came in 2 days and fixed it by releveling the machine and tightning the door.
Problem resolved. Almost 2 weeks ago problem developed again with leak from the door. Being I am in second year of contract I had to call GE warrenty service. They stated I need to wait 48 hours until they find someone. I waited and still after 72 hours they didn't fint anyone and ended refering it back to this same guy that came and fixed it 11 months ago. It took him a additional 6 days to come and service the machine. Claimed because of the Holiday weekend. But thats not a excuse to have to wait 9 days to have a washing machine fixed. And also why isn't their other people that fix these machines. Well machine was fixed or at least I hope it is. He retightened the door and I ran 2 loads after the fact so far no leaks. I have 2 issues here first this should not have happened twice in a year and second why isn't their more people to service these units. And of course not wait so long to get service. I would like to call LG and press them to have more service people be trained. Please comment.

Hey peteski,

Try calling Page appliances in Guilford CT. If LG knows you're really pissed off with your local LG rep, maybe they'll send Page's people (who know what they're doing) rather than have a really unsatisfied customer. Also, a buddy of mine who is savvy about such things suggests that you email the heads of LG and express your displeasure. He suggests we go online to their site and use the site map to find our way to "the top". Name names, slash and burn. Let them know you are a member of this organization (which is international). Apparently they pay more attention to electronic pique than to the old fashioned kind. LG is trying very hard to step onto the world market and can't afford bad publicity right now. Not like GE and Whirlpool who really don't give a shit. All they have to do is drop a nuclear bomb on us and we're history.

Kevin, your LG sound like my Neptune 7500, which has never broken down in 6 years or given me a problem.

Jason, I’m sorry to hear that you lost all of your washer cycle footage, but it’ll sure be fun creating new footage. I’ll be glad to help.

Bob, since you’re so close we’re gonna have to have a mini TX wash-in soon.

Ken, I know what you mean about Consumer Reports. They only rated my Maytag Neptune a “Good” in washing performance, but you have to look how they test. They only test the longest “NORMAL” cycle w/ no options on warm/cold. Who’s going to spend $1000.00 plus on a washer and only use the normal cycle? But don’t get me wrong I love Consumer Reports; you just have to read the test behind the tests.
I’ll defiantly look into the Miele w/ 1600 R.P.M. spin. Keep in mind that the diameter of the tub also plays a part in the water extraction (a 4.0cu.ft. tub spinning at 1200 R.P.M. may extract more water than a 1.7cu.ft. tub spinning a 1600 R.P.M.)
