My Hoover 3102E is leaking!!!

Hi, Ijust tried out my Hoover 3102E single tub today and I found two leaks. The first was easy to fix as the hose from the pumpto the top was cracked at the pump so upon realising Hoover were generous with the length of the hose I chopped the cracked bit off and pulled it down a bit and but cable ties at both ends and that problem was solved but in future I might use metal ties. The second leak is the most worrying. Water is leaking from the axle that holds the pulsator and the pulley. Are the bearings leaking or is it a seal? What can I do to fix it?

Leaky bearing

Dont panic this is not a big problem, you will need an allen key to loosen the locking bolt on the rear pulley, then you will need to remove the pulley from the shaft itself, normally gripping it and rocking gently whilst pulling it will release it, if not then put some packing between the pulley outter edge and the tub and lightly tap the shaft with a blunt cross head screw driver or some thing simular, obviously if you have a suitable sized bearing puller then this will do the job without much effort at all

Once you have gotten that off all you need do is push the shaft through the back of the tub making sure you dont lose any washers.
Clean up the shaft and bearing hole with white spirit and liberally grease the shaft and re-insert it, then whilst holding the pulsator push the pulley onto the shaft, push it on to the point that there is no back and forth play, but not so tight it is hard to turn, once this is set then tighten back up the allen bolt in the pulley and re-connect the drive belt

This should sort out the leak.

There are no seals as such on this design, the seal is achieved by close tolerancing of the bush that the pulsator shaft fits in when greased

Right that has now made my head hurt so im off ta bed

I will try that out sometime before this week is out. A thing that has really made me happy about this machine is the fact that I got a usable fill/drain hose! There are some little cracks at the bends but I don't think these are deep enough and it didn't appear to leak when I tested it. The Hotpoint is keeping well and hopefully I can get the hose for it soon. I think 2011 started out very well for me after retiring my first Hoover Single Tub and Servis Spinner to make way for my new collection.
