I have seen some of these but this one has the chrome buttons which are very bedazzling!

well this is the way an old American whirlpool could have looked--left opening lid which doesn't lie completely flat, and all!

With the overhang in back it looks like a Maytag. Really cool looking machine.

Was the side opening lid a Kenmore exclusive?

I have read here before that in the US, the side opening lid was only on Kenmores.
In Australia, all belt-drive Whirlpools had a side opening lid - the machines were made in Australia by Malleys, under license to Whirlpool corporation, and were uniquely Australian models, using many Australian components. (I have no idea what percentage of the machines were Australian made components, the other Aussie members may have better info than me.)

I prefer the back open lids!

I do also Pete. When I had the Kenmore hooked up I was always banging my elbow into that raised side lid.
