Took the pump off of my ‘63 RCA Whirlpool Imperial Mark XII washer (in the process of a refurbishment process) and the pump is much newer than I thought it would be. Looks like it could have possibly had the belt and pump replaced sometime in 1998 since there is a date of 2/3/98 on the drain pump
you need to kick up the action/performance a bit with a wider belt.....
That is something I might consider but I am leaving it the way I found it. Don’t want to try to hot rod it and something ends up breaking. I will be ordering a new belt so that should help the washing performance a little.

Hi Sean, it does not look too bad, you should not need new bearings, maybe a new spin tube, although if you use double top seals on both the agitator shaft and spin tube you should be OK, what does the top of the agitator shaft look like ?
If you clean it up and you will get lots of use and many years out of this washer.

Hi John, I got a picture of the agitator shaft and this is the older style since it doesn’t have the splines in it like the later Whirlpool belt drive washers use. Maybe I’ll need a spin tube but I’ll have to look into it once I get the basket drive off tomorrow.
Did Whirlpool use the same upper seals on the direct drive washers? I believe you mentioned that Whirlpool used the same seals and bearings on the direct drive washers but I am just double checking just to be sure.

Used the same inner and outer diameter seals for the spin tube and the agitator shaft, there were several different styles used over the 70 years these two machines were in production but they are completely interchangeable.

What is the purpose of having a two speed blower? Seems overly complicated.

All it does is move the belt to the other side of the pulley reducing the air output. I’ve manually switched the belt to the other side of the pulley and it does reduce the air output and certainly makes the dryer a bit quieter but it doesn’t work since a part of the belt shifter is busted off and doesn’t do anything at all. One of these days I’ll look into a replacement belt shifter but it still works by reducing the heat output but not the blower/fan air output.

Right, but what is gained by having less air output?
Reduced airflow rate helps avoid lightweight items such as lingerie from getting pulled/stuck to the exhaust port in the drum.
Interesting. Never thought about fine delicates getting sucked into the exhaust port.
Got the outer tub out, and this is what the baseplate looks like after a quick wipe down. Seems to be in good shape and there is some rust on the left front of the base plate but that’s more than likely from someone overfilling the bleach dispenser since the bleach and fabric softener dispensers are right above that area of the baseplate. Plan on putting POR15 on that area of the baseplate and the rest of the inside of the cabinet to prevent it from developing any rust in the future.

So does this dryer have 2 tumbling speeds? I thought moving the belt made the drum tumble slower & faster, depending which pulley the belt was on?

Not 2 speed tumbling but a 2 speed air output. With a lower air output, items tend to not get pulled towards the exhaust outlet as easily and is ideal for delicate fabrics. Will also make the dryer more quiet since the exhaust fan/blower is running a lower speed as opposed to the high speed.
