Hmmm. What to have for dinner tonight? Let's consult the Electromatic Skillet for some ideas.
(Skillet was a gift from the J. Smoofington Smithers Foundation.)

"The controlled heat of the Electromatic Skillet makes even "tricky" dishes like Welsh Rarebit a snap!"
(From an imaginary Corningware cookbook I'm going to write one of these days.)
Make sure you stir to smoothness with a cornflower spoon.

The orange light tells you your coffee is perked to perfection!

Coffee tastes better in a cornflower mug.

wow!

Veg....and I thought I love Corningware!..You have some very rare pieces there. If you are interested, I know of a book on vintage corningware and every single pattern they made. Same for Pyrex..speaking of Pyrex.....here is my new find!! the seller tells me this is brand new in the box from 1963!!!

Perc Parts

If anyone needs any parts from the electric Corningware percs, my thrift had 2 today. One in the Centura pattern and one in an unknown pattern (grey swirly thingys). One had the power cord, the other did not. All inside parts were accounted for and in great shape. Outsides looked pretty good too, no chips or anything like that. $4 plus tax each if anyone wants them. I can run back tomorrow morning. Please e-mail me direct at keungfamily @ netzero.com and I will get right back to you! :-)

Dinner is always an occasion when everything you prepare it and eat it with is made by Corning. Presentation is everything!

i too am curious about the Corning skillet. i have never seen one like it

the only thing missing is a Cornflower commode...

My mother got a big set of "Country Festival" Corningware as a wedding gift. I learned the name this year and until then called it "Rollerskating Chickens" -it's rather appropriate when you think of it, honestly. 2 months or so ago the entire set showed up in a local thrift shop -tumblers, forks, spoons, dry goods jars and gods-know what all else among stacks and stacks of the pans in sizes I hadn't seen since childhood. I was so floored I called my mother and asked if she wanted me to pick it up for her as she has but one pan left (the large square one) of her set. She declined but the entire set was something to see.

Fabulous Corning display! I've seen these skillets before, usually in plain white, but have never picked on up for myself. I love how the pan is a bit different than standard Corning pieces - ground absolutely flat on the bottom.

Great pics, thanks for posting this.

You should come for visit sometime and we'll get tipsy on wine from vintage Libby glasses, snack from Centura plates and then get cornflower tattoos!!

My Electromatic set came with the fence and the 4 qt Dutch oven. The chrome fence sort of flexes into place between the handles and forms a rail maybe a half inch above the heater surface to keep the Dutch oven from sliding off the base. The heater base is quite something. It has ribbon heating elements under the pyroceram cover of the heater base to give very even heat distribution. In the center of the heating elements is a thermostat. The surface of the heater base and the bases of all of the Corning Cook Mates are ground slipery smooth for perfect all over contact between the heater base and the pans. Because the base and the pans are the same material, the heat transfer is so efficient that the thermostat pressing up against the heated surface in the base accurately senses the temperature of the Corning Ware Cook Mate that is sitting on it. Soup simmers perfectly in the Dutch oven. The Pyroceram surface of the heater changes to a dull yellow when it is hot. A disadvantage of the design is that the skillet is smaller than the heating base so any spray or splatters from frying that land on it become brown freckles immediately and have to be polished off with either Soft Scrub or the Corning Cooktop cleaner. In other words, it does not just wipe clean.

Official Recipe

Here's Corning's official recipe for Welsh Rarebit. I used one from the Mary Margaret McBride Encyclopedia of Cooking.

I picked up the skillet dish from the Goodwill a while ago and have been using it on the stovetop. The bottom is ground perfectly flat, but I thought it was meant for use on The Counter That Cooks. How fortuitous that I just happened to have the right one in stock.

I've never seen the fence for the Dutch oven. I think the one I have is 5 quarts?? Have to check when I get home.

Ralph: These skillets are on ebay all the time, though often just the base. I'd say within a week of looking you'll find a perfect one, probably MIB!

What I can never seem to find are the handles for the second issue of Corningware (with the slots to accommodate the wider handles) and the trivet for the Electromatic perks.

Greg: are there cornflower glasses? I must have them! I'd even get rid of my insulated Barbie tumblers to make room. Oh, and I'll show you my tattoo if you show me yours...
